April 18, 2019 Monk Seal Dailies

Today's dailies are brought to you by Team Billand, Lesley and Team T&D. Lesley's Ka'ena Update is part 2 of the dailies.

Team Tammy and Dave did Ka'ena Point today, their only find was RW02 PvKauai at Hidden Beach. He was there on the way in and remained there on their way back.  Team T&D only saw one seal today but they were not disappointed. The whales were putting on a spectacular show today. They saw three of them doing multiple breaches!  Imagine seeing a triple breach.... no photo, but wow what an experience.

Team Billand took a hike out to Ka'ena Point today since things were slow and it was still early. ( Apparently Ka'ena Point was the place to be :-)
Team Billand wanted to meet R366 but he wasn't around today, in fact they didn't see any seals. But like Team T&D they would not be disappointed.  First they see the albatross, but Barbara was beyond thrilled to see the moms and dads feeding the chicks!  Team Billand even saw the decoy and for a moment thought it was real.
Ka'ena Point was full of action today, just not monk seals.  Team Billand found the noddies on the cliffs, it has been quite a while since they had seen them.
Team Billand also got to experience the whales breaching. While watching Team Billand shared their binoculars with a woman Claire from Washington.  ( Actually Team Billand and Team T&D met up briefly shared some ice water and I bet a hug was shared too).
Claire and Barb walked out to the point together, enjoying nature. After climbing the cliff, Claire felt sick, Barbara stayed with her, walked with her met some other hikers. They shared some ice water and wet cloth but she began to feel nauseous and dizzy. They rested and went slow, but Claire was getting worse.
Barbara called 911 and had Robert alert the lifeguards outside the park.  And before they knew it, two fire trucks, the HFD chopper came out to yoks, and the life guard came out with a fireman with a quad.   The chopper dropped off two firemen and helped Miss Claire out of yoks.  Even though Miss Claire told Barb she had a "big mouth, but thanks" I just want to say "YA DONE GOOD!"
Leaving Ka'ena West Barbara saw Ka'ena RO40 resting quietly. This was about noontime right after the big rescue.

Meanwhile Robert was looking for seals on the leeward side and probably had the best luck of seeing monk seals today.  First he found Mr. RIP RR70 on the rocks, looking healthy, scar over eye and ding on back.ROn the return trip to the westside beach about 2:15 Team Billand had reunited and went to recheck RIP, but this time he had company. RH32 Kaale, was there and he is getting very green. His tags were visible when he flexed his flippers. He was looking to move up as the tide was rising. RIP still there in same spot.
WOW What a day!
