5/29/2018 Monk Seal Dailies (part 1 )

Today's dailies are brought to you by Team Billand and Lesley. Lesley's complete update is dailies part 2.

Team Billand was out at the crack of dawn checking in at the Outfall and of course little Ka'ale was coming in. The fishermen said there was another seal earlier, but they never saw a second seal while they were there.  Ka'ale just made two ups, then disappeared.

On a later check during the day they found him at a beach on the Leeward side where he was resting. And then on their last recheck of the day he was still in the same spot in a deep restful sleep.

As a side note, I have been wondering about his buddy N14 Kalani.... and yesterday in an email with NOAA trying to sort out the critters on Rabbit Island N14 came up as a possible ID. But it was nixed since he is visiting his home on Molokai.

Team Billands second find of the day was at Paradise cove, they found Pohaku RO28 doing 5 to 6 minute dives outside of lagoon 2.  She never landed.

Then Robert, Barbara and their friend Debbie spent some time holding their own ceremony to honor Nihoa R912 (761).  They all spent a lot of time with her and since they were unable to attend the spreading of her ashes they spread some Rose petals and Stephanotis flowers.  They went out to Maipalao where she loved to hang out for many months and NOAA spent time chasing her away from the area.  They shared their stories, had their lunch to celebrate Nihoa's life together.  Simple yet full of emotions.  Sounds to me it was a perfect way to honor her and support each other.
