5/11/2018 Monk Seal Dailies: And then there were Six

Today's dailies are brought to you by Team Billand, Lesley and Marilyn. So yesterday were were overloaded with pictures of all the pups, (except PO2) but we are all so over the moon with our Oahu pup count so far..... WELL!!!  We are introducing number SIX!

So Marilyn got a call from posse pal Gayle late afternoon saying she was sure the unknown pregnant seal from yesterday on Rabbit Island gave birth. Marilyn was on her way home, so she stopped by her house grabbed the spotting scope and headed for the Pier. At 6:40 pm, Marilyn located the large female with a small black pup behind her near the far left end of the island. Unfortunately the time of day left very little light. She did not see Mom or PO6 in motion during her short observation. So Mrs. Whisperer best guess is Sadie RB12 is Momma, but the ID will need to be confirmed whenever NOAA gets to Rabbit Island.
About 100 feet east of the 1BS there was a small juvenile seal with a brown coat. This is reported as an U/U. It was too small and wrong color to be PO1. This may be the same juvenile female that was there yesterday.
Marilyn did not see Aukai (RL12) and PO1 Hali'a today, they may have been swimming during her short observation time.

Team Billand spotted Kekoa Alii RK72 at 7:00 am this morning doing 7 minute dives. There were three critters, the 3rd seal could not be ID'd and kept swimming towards the east (small and green was all Barb could see).  Kekoa was coming to land, but RN14 Kalani barked at him and Kekoa turned around headed back out to forage. Team Billand departed at 10:30 to check on other locations, with no luck of finding any critters. They returned to check on
RN14 and now Kekoa was there both on high rocks.

Team Billand made the Ka'ena Trek from the West. They see a critter but not sure exactly who.  With patience and determination (not to mention no water) finally they see a tag. There was RH48 Lei Ola. Once they had the ID, they were out of there to get some water and cool off!

Lesley's started with an early check at the playpen, um, I mean pup
site. RN58 Luana & PO4 day 13 and RL42 & PO5 day 7, were just hauling out from a swimming session. It was a quick visit before she headed out to the point. On her way to the point she found RW02 PvKauai at Hidden Beach.  Once she got to the point she found RO40 Ka'ena was hauled out at an unusual location for him but where other critters have been seen more frequently. Lesley checked for RH32 Ka'ale with no luck.
