6/23/2016 DB's Dailies: Kaiwi&PO4@AD, Kekoa,Cass&Kala@Rabbit Island, Kolohe@Lanai Lookout, RIP@Ka'ena@Ka'ena Point, Nihoa&PO3@Mokuleia

At 0530 we found Kaiwi&PO4 snoozin’ just above the water line fronting their tide pool. At 0905 both would enter the pool . Once again it was mostly calm, but with occasional rogue sets that washed the kid. Kaiwi kept calling him back. There were several short feeds. They were still in the pool when I was relieved.

At 1057 I found Kekoa (RK72)at 3BS, and Cass (RG06) at Seal Rock Inlet. At 1128 Kala hauled out to 1BS. All remained the rest of th observation period.

Gayle called at 1143 with the report of Kolohe (RW22) once again at the Lanai Lookout Flats.

I heard from Team Billand in the afternoon via text, that they were up at the Mokuleia Site with Nihoa&PO3. The also came down to see Kaiwi&PO4, and Kolohe at Lanai Lookout was the cherry on top.

Angie called at 1206 advising that NOAA personnel had vaccinated RIP (RR70) at Ka’ena Point. The also saw Ka’ena (RO40).

Being our side is SEAL FREE these days, I get withdrawls not seeing a seal.

I told Robert, would it be ok if we went North Shore this time, I need to see a seal. I thought, lets get Deb to go too.

All three of us drove out to Nihoa's site...thats a sure thing to find a seal there. Ta da!! Two seals, our legendary Nihoa R912 and her lovely, handsome pup, snoozing side by side. YAHOO. We stayed I guess two hours...great weather...we saw one feed and a very long rough water swim. Pup did all the work, Mom just rolled, along with the currents, keeping pup in sight at all times.

Deb Rob and I left at noon..grabbed some musibis along the way cause, we decided to go see Kaiwi and pup too ... what ta heck, we got time.

As we drove along coast line, we spotted a seal, IT WAS KOLOHE!! I told Deb, sometimes there might be a seal if we look good while driving. TA DA...there he was big as day. COOL!!!! But we kept going to Kaiwi sight first.

Oh there they were, Kaiwi and pup, who had just done a swim session per Gayle. Kaiwi galumphed higher up, pup right by her side.

Nothing like finding a pup and mom...just an appreciation for monk seals and nature.

For some reason the pup just suckled a little while, almost as if mom had no lunch. Pup got irritated, galumphed towards the water and waves hit it. Mom perked up, barked at pup. Few more waves washed over the pup, Mom got nervous, galumphed towards pup. Pup came back up just a bit, went to sleep. Mom still keeping watch on that sweet little thing.

Ok, time to leave, hugged Gayle, thanked her for her work with the seals.

Went to see if Kolohe was still there...YES. Climbed up and over the rocks to get a shot...BATTERY EXHAUSTED!!! One shot, thats it.

We also noticed the fire and ambulance on Makapuu Lookout...some kind of rescue going on. The chopper flew by, with a basket and someone in it. It flew to the Sandy Beach restroom area where more rescue teams out there. Hope it was a good ending to that rescue.

Deb, Rob and I went home, fought traffic, but, we got to see our seals and that made life GREAT!!!!!!

Where is DA BENNY???????????

Was surprised to see the west side peeps stop by during my shift with Nihoa and pup. That sure was a long swim today. What a cute sight to see. Every move Nihoa made, and the pup copied his or her momma. So amazing.
