September 21, 2025 Sunday's Dailies

Todays dailies are brought to you by Marilyn, Team R&B and yours truly. 💗

Marilyn viewed Rabbit Island from 12:40 to 1:52 pm and there was only one seal seen during that time.
Unfortunately there were also two humans.
An Unknown Juvenile or Weaner was near 3BS: weaner to juvenile size and two red tags.
Soon after Marilyn located thee seal she spotted a jetski anchored off the island. Then she saw a man and woman wandering the shore. Soon after they individually walked by the seal who did not like their presence and moved into the water at
12:47 pm and was not seen again.
The humans seem to be shelling along the shoreline and finally got back on the jetski and left about 1:36 pm. Marilyn will submit a report to DOCARE.

Team R&B saw two seal foraging together at rest camp. They were able to ID RH48 Lei Ola and R3CX Nalu. There was lots of activity out in the water today, kayaks, canoes etc.

From afar they spotted a seal onshore at tracks. They weren't able to get over to the site to make an ID. They think it was a male with a new coat adult size. But that was about it, so it was reported as an Unknown Adult.

Team R&B decided to make their way to plains. Once again they found R416 Makalii resting alone. That was until a group of kids came by and Team R&B overheard them saying they wanted the seal to wake up and move. They asked what if I threw something at it, or I can feed it some sardines.  Team R&B spoke up by saying No, and gave them a quick monk seal 101 lesson.  Needless to say its frustrating and trying on ones patience.

Heading back they stopped at pokai. There was Miss Kala RH76
resting and is now about 99% done with her molt. She is looking quite beautiful.
They spotted another seal from afar at Makua. The seal was high up on shore resting alone. A couple of people pasted by and were respectful. Team T&B weren't able to make and ID from their photos. When they went to take a few more shots the seal was gone, they saw two dogs loose in the area where the seal was.

I was inspired by Team R&B's visit to see Ho'ailona, so I went today to check on the old boy!  He's 17 years old and that is about as long as I have been involved with Hawaiian Monk Seals.  It brought back lots of memories and I actually got to share them with Brenda from NOAA who happen to be there visiting today.  I'm happy he is back on Oahu and plan on visiting more often.
