10/29/2017 Monk Seal Dailies: Kekoa Alii (RK72), Pohaku (RO28), Aukai (RL12), Three Rabbit Island Critters, Kea (RN46), Right Spot (R016)

Today's dailies are brought to you by Team Billand, Lesley, Mrs. Whisperer and Gayle.

Team Billand was out doing their rounds and spotted a seal at Maili. There they ID'd RK72 Kekoa Alii on the lower rocks sleeping. There were lots of homeless folks around the area today before 6am, the Billands decided to leave the area to keep Kekoa and themselves safe. When they went back later he was gone. They did note he looked good, nice weight, no molt yet.

Team Billand was headed out to Makua side when they got a call of two seals, so they hurried back to Plains.  Pohaku RO28 was high up on shore resting, Lifeguard already put up signs and ropes. She looks great and has gained weight. The other seal took off before Team Billand got to site, never saw the seal. Pohaku left at 2:45 pm.

Lesley was out this morning for another hike out to the point. She met up with Jaime and they hiked back out together. The only seal out there today on Back Beach was a little surprise, it was RL12 Aukai, she is looking great. Lesley had a good chance to document her ID old and new marks.

Mrs. Whisperer spent several hours viewing Rabbit Island from Makai Pier this afternoon. When she first looked at noon, she found two seals, one about 20 feet east of the first blue sign (1BS) and a second seal about 10 feet west of the 3BS. At 13:43 a new seal arrived and hauled out about 30 feet east of the 3BS. There was no interaction among any of the seals.

Seal #1 unknown adult or subadult male with 2 red tags. Seems to have a relatively new coat. No other distinctive markers.
Seal #2 unknown juvenile (probably male) with 2 red tags. This seal has a somewhat brown coat and gave lots of belly and back views, but could not get an ID
Seal #3 RN46 (Kea) Identified by the small natural bleach marks on his left front flipper and larger natural bleach on his right front flipper. He has molted since NOAA applied his N46 bleach on 9/27/17.

Posse Pal Gayle spotted two seals on Rabbit Island ( I am going to guess seal #1 & #2 that Marilyn spotted). Gayle also spent some time with Right Spot R016 at Kaupo Beach. Right Spot departed at 12:25 and did not return for the rest of the day.
