10/1/2017 Monk Seal Dailies: Kekoa RK72, Holokai RG40, RJ16, Kawena RH36, U/U and U/M

Today's Dailies are brought to you by Marilyn, Team Billand, and Tammy.

Team Billand's first find of the day was Kekoa Alii RK72 at Maili this morning.  He was just coming in when they arrived and watched him haul up on the lower rocks, he was alone.

Then Team Billand made the ride to the north shore to peek in on RJ16. They arrived at the Keiki Pool at 10:15 am and he was snoozing on shore.
While he snoozed they took a walk around to see if there were any other critters about... no one was around. When they returned to the Keiki Pool, RJ16 was in the water just beyond the pool. He had something in his mouth, head up in the air and tossing his flippers.  Upon closer examination, looks like RJ16 caught himself a TACO, he was a busy kid.

Team Billand's last find of the day was Holokai at Kuulima, he was alone, newly molted and looking handsome.

Posse Pal Tammy was also on the North Shore and sent in photos of RJ16 and Holokai. Thank you Tammy.

Marilyn spent  about 3 hours at Makai Pier today viewing Rabbit Island. At 12:04 she saw several seals in the shallows near Seal Rock Inlet. At 12:34 two seals crawling onto the beach near SRI.
The first seal was able to ID RH36 Kawena by her NEW LARGE N37 applied bleach. (THANK YOU NOAA). Marilyn was also able to see her female belly through the spotting scope.  The second seal went behind the waterfront rocks and she was unable to get any ID.

At 12:34 the second or possibly a third seal hauled out to the west of Kawena and then galumphed over to her. This was a larger seal with a newer coat and had red tags. Marilyn never got a look at this seals' belly and reported as an Unidentified/Unknown,  At 12:39 a juvenile/weaner hauled out, the seal is reported as an Unknown/Male. There is a possibility it's RJ06 Aka, but can not be sure, although she did see a male belly and did not see any applied bleach.

At least we got one positive ID .... !!! YEA!

Yesterday was fun. We didnt find any more seals on west side, got to talking about taking a long drive to the other side of the island...it was still Early.

Drive was nice NO TRAFFIC, such a pleasant peaceful ride, beautiful scenery, DIFFERENT.

Did our walk, got to see RJ16 snoozing his little heart away on shore and met Karen Kalanta, who is getting a nice tan from the Hawaiian Hot Sun.

We went farther around the the area, found ONE TINY FLOAT YEA! Saw a huge orange float, TOO BIG and TOO HEAVY for my collection of floats. Pile of Debris still there up on shore. Wonder when they will remove all of it. Amazing stuff in the same area, and still some more coming in.

Saw lots of netters this time and people fishing, collected some sea glass, Yippee.

Walked back and Met up with TONY Q, who is looking well and happy. Always nice to meet old friends from the times we were so close talking about the seals.

Also met up with Karen Turner, was a treat to talk to her as well. We got glimpses of RJ16 foraging up a storm. He was busy tossing something about, got just one shot what I thought looked like a taco. At times seemed he had something black in his mouth...busy little fat chubby boy. Always a great joy to watch a pup getting along without his Mama.

We went walking all around the area to the hotel end and a bay area, so beautiful, but so many tourists there. And then, we found a seal which turned out to be HOLOKAI. Last we saw him, he was so green, and this time he was fully molted and HANDSOME. Met up with a cheerful volunteer named Cindy and a joy to talk to.

We were dead tired, and decided to take a drive by a place called Kawela bay..never been there...nice place, a forest of large trees and learned this is where Lost was filmed and saw this place featured in Hawaii Five O series other night. COOL. Saw a beautiful SHAMA who Posed for us and then, it was time for........ a dessert.

Got to Teds, full of tourists as always, waited for my turn for a much needed dessert...CHOCOLATE HAUPIA...our favorite. BUT....to my disappointment...THERE WASNT ANY CHOCOLATE HAUPIA in the fridge. Crap...had to settle for : CHANTILLY....it was ... OK. Nothing like Chocolate Haupia, TRUST ME.

And our last stop since we were in the area...PETCO for some much needed meal worms for the pets. And they had WORMS...yea...Kapolei didnt. My pets will be thrilled.

It was time to go home at 4pm..a long day of fun in the sun with the seals and old friends...and there was NO TRAFFIC TO FIGHT...JOY JOY.

After our day, we both knocked out and awoke in time for the news to see two men arrested for harassing a seal on MAui??? R308 on shore resting and these guys tried to roll her in the water or something. Tsk. Tsk.

So I am grateful for Yesterday'S EVENTS...WE CAME HOME IN ONE PIECE...No falls today..Life is good. AMEN.
