12/19/2014 DB's Dailies: RM38&Aukai@RI, Kea@BH, Pohaku@Secrets, Haupu@WP, Benny@Makaha

While watching from above Eternity Beach at 0745 I saw Kea (RN46) come swimming into the ETB channel. He often does this during foraging, but whether or not he might have hauled out to ETB, was pretty much controlled by the professional photo shoot taking place right where he would have preferred to haul. He made no attempt to haul out, but instead moved to the entrance to the small cove on the Sandy Beach side of the Blowhole lookout at 0803. He would haul out to the cove at 0807, and remained there the rest of the day. Kea departed at 1746.

At 0945 I found what would prove to be Aukai (RL12) at the log, amongst the Morning Glory, 40 ft left of 1BS on Rabbit Island.

 At 1012 on a pan I found RM38 hauling out to the far left end of the beach. He began to move up, and Aukai began to move down. They would spend the rest of the day a mid beach. There was never any observed interaction.

Team Billand called at 0645 with the report of Pohaku (RO28) at Secrets. She was still there when they had to depart for two additional calls, at 1130.

At 1140 they called to advise that they were responding to a call of an animal at White Plains. When they arrived at 1149 they found Haupu (RB24) at Tower#1, White Plains. An 1830 text from Dana advised that Natalia had reported Haupu’s departure and that another U/U had arrived at 1630, but no ID was possible. Awaiting photos. The 1140 call had also advised of an animal at Lanikohonua, KoOlina. Shortly thereafter the Billands were advised that the animal had departed.

 Ocean Safety called at 1514 with a report of an animal at Makaha. The Billands called Debbie to go, and at 1548 Debbie confirmed that it was Benny (RE74).

Team Billand found an animal at Maili Pt, at 1642 but the rough surf and lousy observation conditions made an ID impossible. Hopefully, Barbara’s shots confirmed the Kolohe (RW22) ID.
