11-3-2012 DB's Dailies: Rabbit Island, Spitting Cave, Sandy's, Ka'ena Point, Turtle Bay

The highlight of my day came early. On my 0711 Spitting Cave check a small, pristine, brown coated , red tagged little critter suddenly popped up close to the big rock. It would only do two more ups, so I was shooting like crazy , trying to get an ID. My guess was that it almost had to be Aukai (0915), and sure enough when I hurried home to look at the shots, I found that I had totally lucked out and managed to get an L13 tag shot. This marks the first time our little Rabbit Island weaner has been seen away from home, at just a tad short of her 4 month birthday.

At 0945 I found Kolohe (0946) snoozin' on the water front rocks at Seal Rock Inlet on Rabbit Island. He would be the lone RI resident today.

At 1023 SB lifeguard, Billy called with the report of an animal just hauling out to the east end of Sandy Beach. Since it was nearing Buster Time, I had already departed the pier and was enroute to SB. When I arrived at 1027 there was Buster (1027). I cordoned him off, and he has remained the rest of the day.

Team Billand called at 0815 reporting Kermit (R012) in the water off Nimitz Cove. He would finally haul out fronting #1705 at Nimitz Cottages at 0845. They reported Kermit's departure at 1726.

Cianna called at 1006 with the report of an animal at Makaha. Debbie responded but the Billands made the Benny (RE74) ID at 1313.

Cianna called again at 1057 with the report of an animal at Paradise Cove. Once again there was a volunteer on scene, but the Billands would get the Pohaku (RO28) ID at 1217.

At 1136 Cianna called again with the report of an animal at Nanakuli. The Billands found nobody when they arrived.

Cianna's 1605 call reported an U/U near the Polo Field, Mokuleia. The photos provided did not offer anything of ID value.

Marilyn & Lesley trekked to Ka'ena Point today. Arriving at 1000 to find Ka'ena (RO40), no visible molting, and RL42 together in "Ka'ena's Pool". RL42 had her face in the water during their entire stay, so no assessment of her new wounds was possible At the main point beach they found Kerby (RW08) and Noa (R6FI) together.

Diga sent photos of RL54 at Turtle Bay. She and Karen Turner did the trek. This was Karen's last seal day, before returning to exile in some place called Florida.

This little girl has two very special Aunties ( Karen and Diane) not only did they witness the birth but sat with her for hours and hours on end.... If there is any two people who know this little critter it would be them.
