Marilyn viewed Rabbit Island from 10:25 am to 12:58 pm and there were five seals on island today. Also a NOAA team made their way out today to tag the weaners.
Just hauled out onto LPB were two seals:
RM31 Kai (RL42's 2020 male pup) sub-adult size, older coat, male belly and two red tags. This is first time that they are aware of his being on this part of the island.
Nearby was female weaner PO4 who is now tags with U38 and U39.She has been with a sub-adult to adult male the last few day which Marilyn now assumes has been RM31. After PO4 was tagged she entered the water, but later hauled out on the rock flats on the Lanikai side of LPB.
Alone about 20 feet of the middle cliff side of 3BS was male weaner PO3. He got his U24 and U25 bling. He then moved down near the water front rocks, but did not enter the water.
About 50 feet on the SRI side of 3BS were two seal together:
Sub-adult female RQ4P Manana (RL12 Aukai's 2021 pup) NOAA had gotten a temporary 215 roto tag on her while she was still nursing, and she never got her permanent tags. Fortunately her 215 Roto tag is still attached, so the team was able to ID her.
Next to RQ4P was a sub-adult male R7AF. NOAA believes, he may be one of the 2020 male RI pups who did not get tagged because of covid. R7AF got 7AF and 7AG tags when he had to be captured for a hook removal.
The NOAA team was preparing to give RQ4P her permanent tags, when RM31 showed up and checked out PO3/RU24 and then galumphed over to RQ4P and R7AF and pursued the former into the water. So plans to tag her got scrapped.
Team R&B had an appointment today so they got a late start in their searching for seals. When they finally made it out to pokai they found two seals at the seal inlet. Therewas RH32 Kaale on the rocks edge and the other seal was R3CX Nalu in the shallows.
R3CX Nalu would slither off and Kaale RH32 stayed for a bit.
Nalu went over to the next inlet, hauled up, and looked around. He then began to rub his body on the rocks in the shallows. Rolling over and over then slithered off and they did not see him again.
Team R&B did note they had watched over Nalu and they did not see any hook or trailing lines.
