December 23, 2019 Monk Seal Dailies

Today's dailies are brought to you by Team Billand and Melody.  Team Billand had quite the day THIRTEEN seals.... so here it is.

Team Billand arrived at the outfall at 7 am and were told by the fishermen they saw some seals. There were lots of splashes, fighting and traveling in and out of the outfall. They new one of the seals was Ka'ale RH32,  another RN14 Kalani and one female they weren't able to ID.

After leaving the outfall they headed over to plains and found Rocky RN58 already roped off and signs up by the lifeguards.  Rocky was resting peacefully.
Team Billand did the best to educate folks, they called the hotline as the beach was crowded today.
They also let Melody know Rocky was in the area. Melody arrived close to 10 am and Team Billand left Rocky in good hands.

Melody arrived wearing her HMSPO t-shirt and upon arrival was told by the life guard she was going to be busy. There was another seal, after checking on Rocky she met up with Team Billand who had just called in Pohaku RO28 into the hotline. Melody split her time between the two bathing beauties. And spent more time near Rocky since she was in a more public space.  Melody got to spend lots of time talking about these two beautiful females and all their beautiful children.  After three hours Melody had to leave.  No volunteers had been to the site at this time, but both seals were roped off and the life guards keep an eye on them when they can.

Team Billand headed over to a west side location and here were five seals, three of them were probably at the outfall earilier in the morning.
Kalani, Ka'ale, Kawena and RIP were on the lower rocks.  RW02 PvKauai was to the right and a little hard to see.  They watched the five seals for a while, there wasn't much movement at all. Only RIP moved to a shallow pond to cool off.
They did returen in the afternoon and all five seal remained in their spots all sleeping soundly.

Off to the next stop and they were surprised to find three females. But what was especially surprising for them was seeing RJ58 Kaimana snoozing next to Lei Ola RH48.  There was a big female sleeping closer to the water, they ID'd RL42 Leia.

One would think that was a good seal day and call it a day. But not Team Billand (and one of the many reasons I admire them), they continued on and did the Ka'ena west trek.
There they found Ka'ena R040.  RL98 Lina who was being visited by some people who were WAY too close. And lastly they spotted RK40 Napua, who showed her tags making it possible for Team Billand to get an ID.

Unfortunately as great of day they had, Team Billand also witnessed some not so welcoming sites. Between the photographer getting too close to RL98 they spotted four dogs out at Ka'ena West, which are not allowed.
