4/26/2018 Monk Seal Dailies: (part 1)

Today's dailies are brought to you by Lesley & Team T&D, Team Billand, posse pal Vicki, Canadian Posse Darlene & Todd and photographer Melody.  Team T&D joined Lesley, the full update is part 2 of the dailies.

Team Billand was at KoOlina at 5:15 am where they found Pohaku RO28 resting in the dark. They put up the zone and made two calls to the hotline.  They educated the all the folks that were out for their early morning excursions.   At 7:48 am they reluctantly left the site, but it was time to check on the other critters.  Hopefully someone checked in on her.

At 8 am at a Westside Beach they found da Benny RE74 hanging by the big boulders, sleeping in peace. Talked to the folks there did some monk seal 101, and called the hotline. Volunteer Melina arrived at 8:40, so off went Team Billand to their next stop.

Arriving at a Leeward Beach they were greeted by finding Kekoa
RK72 on the left high rock. It took them a minute to be sure, but he showed his signature scar on his right cheek. He is back from who knows where. He is in good condition, no new marker, no hooks !
Just below in the shallows they spotted a second seal, and this was RW02 PvKauai. Later on he galumphed onto the lower rocks and stayed there rest of the day. On their afternoon checks both seals remained and were fine.

After many checks to another Leeward Beach they finally found a critter. There was RN14 Kalani on the rocks looking healthy and sleeping alone today. He is getting a lot more scratches on his body, seem Miss Pohaku gave him some of them yesterday.

Well seems Honey Girl R5AY and PO2 had some visitors today despite the rainy weather. Posse Pal Vicki and photographer Melody made a visits during the day. Thank you both so much for sharing your photos.  ** CORRECTION** Vicki was with Kaiwi not 5AY... my mistake in mislabeling the photos. ***

AND saving the best for last .... it happened we have PO3, Kaiwi gave birth on 4/23.  I agreed to wait to post anything to ensure HMAR was able to secure the site, set up the zone, and they had their schedule in place.  I will ask anyone who comes across them, to be respectful to the rules at the pupping site, and don't forget to thank the volunteers for their efforts.  ( I was going to say don't forget to tip your bartender, but until we have a bar on site, I think saying thank you is appropriate :-)
( Thank you to our Canadian Posse (DB would be so happy) and Melody for sharing). AND Vicki **
