4/16/2018 Monk Seal Dailies:

Today's dailies are brought to you by Team Billand and photographer Melody.

First stop for Team Billand at Paradise cove, they didn't see anything but stuck around and sure enough saw something in the water.  There was a head and they could hear familiar vocals, saw a mouth wide open and knew right away it was RN14 Kalani looking for someone to hang out with.
He came close to shore, watched two mountain doves fighting, was not hapy with them making all that noise, he gave a snort and turned away. He headed through the channel towards Aunties, they followed on land and lost sight of him.  They waited and searched around and then a big head was bobbing up and down the outside of the lagoon. It was Kalani checking everywhere for his buddies. He gave up and headed west.

Team Billand left and headed west pulled over at one of the west end beaches and sure enough there was Kalani RN14 just coming in BELLOWING, calling out for his friends, anybody, but nothing. He galumphed over the rocks into the pond stuck his head in the pond and stayed. Poor guy was sulking, they left, he was alone.

Heading further west Team Billand found their Big Boy Ka'ena RO40 alone on the rocks snoozing.  On their recheck in the afternoon Ka'ena was gone. However they did find a turtle on shore to the right on sand.  It was resting other than some old battle wounds and scars on the back of its shell.

At a Leeward Beach they did another check and now they found two seals. Kalani RN14 and his favorite buddy butt head Ka'ale RH32.  Ka'ale RH32 was on the rocks up above, and RN14 Kalani was below in the shallows snoozing.

Ka'ale  spotted the dolphins and was watching them, turned to stretch, snort then got on his belly and dug out. Why? who knows, but he actually headed for the dolphin pod. They lost sight of him, and Kalani RN14 woke up from his nice long nap, looking for his friend. Oh well you snooze you lose.

Email from Melody came with a couple photos of Pohaku RO28. She was out at plains today, when Melody arrived around noon. The SRA was already set up by the lifeguards. Melody called it into the hotline. She stayed for a while educating the folks on the beach, especially the visitors from Tennessee, Washington and Oregon.  Needless to say Pohaku is looking quite plump and healthy :-)
