HMMA Update from September 6th

The morning began at 0450 with a report of a seal at Paradise Cove. Barbara would ID Pohaku (RO28). Warren responded and spent the morning with Pohaku. Later Chrissy checked in to report Pohaku entered the water to forage at 1310. Pohaku would haul out again at 1224. Steve checked in at 0621 with a report of a seal at Kaimana Beach. He would later report observed molting. Jon and Carissa arrived and ID'ed Rocky (RH58). Steve checked in again at 0900 to report Rocky's departure. At 0703 a report came in about a seal at Guard Rails. Melina responded and ID'ed Nihoa (R912). Melina reported a second seal. DB helped with the identification as Kerby (RW08)! Later Barbara also confirmed the Kerby ID by tag.

At 0828 Susie and Melissa checked in with a report of Lei Ola (RH48) foraging in the Keiki Pool. At 1037 Jennie checked reporting Lei Ola was still foraging. Diane arrived at 1400 and also observed Lei Ola foraging. At 1600 Lei Ola finally hauled out. Jon and Carissa checked in at 0828 with a report of Kaiwi (RK96) at the Outrigger Canoe Club. At 1125 a report came in of a second seal hauling out at the Outrigger Canoe Club. Jon ID'ed Rocky (RH58). At 1342 a report came in about a seal at Kuilima Cove. Diane responded and ID'ed Holokai (RG40). Turtle Bay staff reported Holokai initially hauled out at 1245. At 1430 Brittany checked in with a report of an UU foraging off Nimitz Beach. Marilyn checked in at 1650 with a report of Kawena (RH36) swimming in the tide pools 50 yards east of the AD wall. Terri checked in at 1744 with a report of a seal hauling out at Paradise Cove to join Pohaku. Terri would ID Benny by his E40 tag. Terri noted some white substance on his right nostril. Terri did not observe the hook or line. NOAA to respond in the morning.

Melina check in via email and reported Nihoa (R912) with another seal, later ID'ed as Kerby (RW08), at 0815. Nihoa is resting peacefully. Kerby was is in tide pool next to Nihoa. Melina noted a scar on left side of Kerby's stomach area and a small scar on his face. Melina checked on them again at 1300. Nihoa had moved to an open flat area and was sleeping. Kerby had rolled off the tide pool into ocean as Melina was making her way over to them. The two remained at 1340 when Melina departed.

Diane checked in via email after her afternoon Turtle Bay shift. As Diane was arriving she was received a report from Brenda at Turtle Bay, of Holokai (RG40) hauled out at the east end of Kuilima Cove. Turtle Bay staff had already set up a zone for him and he was resting as best he could with the activity around him. Holokai is still very green. No sign of molting yet. After checking on Holokai Diane went to the Keiki Pool and found Lei Ola (RH48) foraging, as usual, just outside the Keiki Pool. At 1600, she hauled out and spent some time playing with sticks before nodding off.

Marilyn checked in via email with a report of Kawena (RH36) at Alan Davis about 50 yards east of the parking area. Marilyn notes some stringy substance on Kawena's eye. Marilyn believes it is probably sticky tubules from a sea cucumber. Kawena seems to be able to open the eye in spite of the gunk.

Don checked in via email at 1603 with a report of a sleeping Luana (RN58) at Secret Beach in Mokuleia.
