1-20-2013 DB's Dailies: Buster@RI, KC@Lanikai, Makaiwi&Benny@WP, Kermit@KCG, Pohaku@Secrets, R5AY@Pounders, RI37@Laie Pt

At 0719 I found Buster (RV08) tucked into the base of the cliff at the left end of the beach on Rabbit Island. When I got back to Makai Pier at 0928 he was gone, however at 0959 he would haul out 80 ft right of 1BS. Since there was a 3 ft cut in the beach , he galumphed left to a location directly below 1BS where he spent the rest of the day.

Buster was to be the only flippered resident of RI today, however he was not alone. Unfortunately, 2 males and 1 female arrived at Rabbit Island via kayak at 1341. They would land 50 ft right of Buster, and a male and female would move to within 20 ft of Buster for photo ops. As if all that weren't bad enough, they moved up into the vegetation line, and proceeded to build a cooking FIRE, and barbequed until their departure at 1541. Of course, DOCARE was called and thankfully, all were busted upon their return to Kaupo Beach Park at 1608.
Team Billand reported Makaiwi (R4DF) fronting #1707 at 0717.

At 0734 Tatiana called with the report of an animal in Lanikai. Donna and Diane would respond and confirmed the KC (RK28) ID at 0928. Donna called at 1821 to advise that KC had departed. Thank you to Diga and Donna for yet another above and beyond day !!

Team Billand checked in at 1037 to report Kermit (R012) at Kalaeloa Campgrounds.
At 1121 the Billands would report Pohaku (RO28) at Secrets, KoOlina.

My pal Mike Steward (World's Best Bodyboarder....EVER !) called at 1341 to report an animal at Pounder's (Laie). His description was that of R5AY , and a call to Dana confirmed that it was , in fact, R5AY, and volunteers were on it.

Team Billand called to advise that Benny (RE74) had hauled out to join Kermit at KCG at 1013. He would relocate to join Makaiwi at WP at 1026.

Dana called at 1631 to advise of RI37 at Laie Point.

Honestly this just makes me sooo mad... it's one thing to be out on the beaches and people get to close or push the parameter to get that kodak moment with seals... But when people are on Rabbit Island it is sooo wrong on so many levels.  So DB thank you for not only looking after the seals, BUT also watching over Rabbit Island. I still say with today's technology we should be able connect some type of speaker system on the beach...
a fire? really? they should lock them up just for this.... can you imagine if there was an ember blown off from the wind.?

Ooopps, the last shot is of Benny Boy...No Kermit shots here. Missed em huh?

Kermit was visited by many locals and it was so disturbing to see them....IN HIS FACE, tossing sand at him. I nearly died of a heart attack...just inches away from him guys. BUT..we did our thing, got all the folks back...IMMEDIATELY. AND WE GAVE SOME SEAL 101 to da MAX. Whenever we come upon a seal with so many people up close..it sickens us...ALOT.

And after all that guarding of Kermit by Laurie Finley and Glen Cober....the kids ran Kermit off any ways. Shame on all those kids. Thanks Laurie and Glen for trying your best.

Oh and thanks to Jean a new Volunteer for taking care of Benny and Makaiwi. Seems DA BENNY snuck up on Jean...a visitors big straw hat flew in the zone, some girls making noise to bother the seals, the signs fell over as Jean rushed to expand the zone...but she never gave up. And later, John the Janitor came and helped Jean out. Thanks guys, for being their for Benny and Makaiwi. Seal work can get .... complicated at times, Jean, You are a ... VOLUNTEER WITH YOUR FIRST STRIPES ALREADY REWARDED! He.He. Good job guys...all of you. Just to let you know, we sat with Benny and Makaiwi till 6:30pm...just to make sure...those guys didnt bother them. Who knows what went on AFTER we left last night...hmmmm.
Thanks to the Pohaku team as well...KoOlina, Secrets. There were tons of visitors as usual, but April, Linda and not sure who else guarded her....THANK YOU!!!!

One day left to this THREE DAY WEEKEND...YIKES!!!
