1-30-2013 Aukai RL12 Incident

The following photos are the property of NOAA/NMFS and are under permit number 932-1905. A big shout out to the NOAA/PIFSC team who responded so quickly and was able to take care of RL12 Aukai..... and of course to DB for without his watchful eye who knows what would have happened.
PLEASE !!! Note these important numbers
1) If anyone has information about this incident, please contact NOAA's enforcement hotline 800-853-1964
2) If you observe a sick or injured marine mammal please contact the NOAA Hotline for marine mammal emergencies 888-256-9840
3) If you mistakenly hook or spear a seal, please call the NOAA hotline so animal care experts can provide immediate medical care for the seal.

I am sure we are all grateful that the puncture from the spear did not do any serious damage and she is expected to make a full recovery. She probably was more traumatized by the team descending upon her.

If DB hadnt been out there, OBSERVING his beloved family on Rabbit Island, NONE of this would have been known. Thanks from our hearts DB, for being so loyal to the critters, always out there no matter how strong the winds get, no matter how heavy the rains, or how hot it gets...YOU ARE THERE, WATCHING.

You have been so caring over many YEARS..making sure all is good for our CRITICALLY ENDANGERED MONKS. Once again, YOU WERE THERE FOR SWEET AUKAI...made that call, got the ball rolling...GOD BLESS YOU.

Dont know much about spears, but looking at this thing, looks home made, put together to do some damage. Luckily, this sweet young female monk, GOT AWAY this time.

Thanks NOAA for being READY to respond, for getting that awful spear OUT OF THE HEAD OF AUKAI!!

Cant imagine the PAIN this little one suffered. We have observed monks who get hooked...they immediately jump about, toss the head every where to get the hooks off. AUKAI must have been jerking all over the place...so glad this story turned out for the better.

When you think about this EVENT, you will see, just how much a Monk Seal SUFFERS DAILY in its LIFETIME. Folks see them on shore, say things like, OH WHAT A LIFE, JUST LAYING THERE BEING FAT AND LAZY!!! I want to be a monk seal too. ROPE ME OFF PLEASE...NAH...you will experience things like: dogs chasing you, sharks trying to bite you, kids tossing rocks at your body, getting hooked, yelled at, hind flippers pulled, slapped, shot at, beaten to death, speared, run off, the list goes on and on. MONKS SUFFER!!! And all they are trying to do is...SURVIVE, REST. They hardly make noise, maybe a snort, a sneeze, but basically, they are quiet, sleep alot .... because they keep getting .... BOTHERED.

Lets all keep them...SAFE...PROTECT THEM...LET THEM SLEEP. I always say..they are living fossils in a MODERN WORLD.

Thank you DB...NOAA..what would the MONK SEALS DO WITHOUT YOU ALL.

BAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!
