October 27, 2019 Monk Seal Dailies

Today's dailies are brought to you by Team Billand, Marilyn and an update from Lesley.  Since we had technical difficulties loading the photos from yesterday, they have all been re-posted.

Team Billand went to the outfall between 7:45 through 9:55 this morning. There were two seal foraging, one was Ka'ale RH32 and the other was RN14 Kalani.
There were lots of fishermen out there today, all went well no hooks and no stealing. Team Billand suspects Kalani caught himself and ate a tako.

Next stop to a west side haulout they found Kekoa RK72 resting alone on the rocks.
On their recheck he was gone.

Late morning on a check they found Ka'ale RHew alone, in full snooze mode in the pond breathing bubbles.
Just when they were ready to leave, they spotted Kalani RN14 coming into the area, then landing by Ka'ale (his bosom buddy). Since Ka'ale was sound a sleep there was no interaction, even when RN14 Kalani sneezes no reaction from Ka'ale. So the two buddies snoozed the day away.

Last critter of the day for Team Billand was little RL20 Kalua. He was hiding in the rocks, smart little buggah.

Marilyn was out this morning making the rounds. She was thrilled to find RK24.  She called him into the hotline and stayed with him for over an hour. Volunteer Gina responded and met up with Marilyn. He was ID'd by his juvenile size, light male belly and his K24/25 tags. He is looking healthy and well-fed.

Marilyn observed Rabbit Island from 1:45 to 3:00 today and there were four seals.
Three seals were in a group between 20 and 40 feet left of the first blue sign. This group included:
RK37 born on Rabbit Island in 2018, juvenile size, lighter female belly, two tags and a small natural bleach on her left rear side near the belly.
UU #1, juvenile size, two tags, newish coat, Marilyn never saw the
belly so unknown gender.
UU #2, juvenile size, gray belly possibly female with two tags.

About 60 feet of the 3BS was an adult with an old coat. This would prove to be RW22 Kolohe, who was ID'd by the natural bleach behind his RFF,  Marilyn also observed his applied N22 bleach, although it does not show very well in the photos. According to Marilyn's notes Kolohe molted the second week of November, so maybe this is pre-molt behavior.
