2/17/2016 DBs Dailies: Kea@Blowhole,Sandy Beach&Rabbit Island, Kainoa&RG32@ Rabbit Island, Benny@L#2 KoOlina, RIP,RK36,Kolohe,Kimo Kai&Kekoa@ Maili Point, Pohaku@Campbell Industrial Park, Y/N, BG Ka'ena Point,

At 0652 I found a foraging animal at Blowhole, doing 6 minute dives. It would prove to be Kea (RN46). When I got back there for a 2nd look at 0756 he was gone, so I went to Sandy Beach just in case. Sure enough Kea & I arrived at the outfall at the east end of SB at exactly the same time (0816). He lolled for a while and then hauled out at 0820. I unloaded the equipment and began to erect the SPZ. Just as I got the last sign in the ground I heard the familiar, wet, flop, flop, flop, and turned to see him entering the water, at 0840. I watched until he went out of sight, headed out and east. Since we had begun at Blowhole I thought it likely that he was headed east and possibly even back to Rabbit Island.

At 0900 I found Kainoa (RN04)&RG32 at 3BS in the grass, at Rabbit Island. They would later move down. It isn’t often that you have the chance to time a trip by one of the animals, but I lucked out today. Kea departed Sandy Beach at 0840. At 1101 he hauled out to join Kainoa & RG32 at Rabbit Island. 2 hrs, 21 min from SB to RI ! All would remain the rest of the day.

Team Billand had yet another interesting day. At 0509 I got a Billand text advising that Dana had texted them about an animal at Lagoon#3 , KoOlina. It would turn out to be Lagoon#2 instead, and it was Benny (RE74). He would depart at 0737. Per posse member Gavin& family, Benny came in last night around 2100.

Once again Maili Point provided them a bumper croppa’ critters. When they arrived at 0923 RIP (RR70) & RK36 were already on the rocks. Shortly thereafter here came a gang of 3, Kolohe (RW22), Kimo Kai (RT12) & Kekoa (RK72). All 5 would remain the day.

At 1249 the Billands found Pohaku (RO28) foraging off Campbell Industrial Park.

In the Yesterday’s News department (in this case the day before yesterday’s news), Dana forward shots from Lauralynn Jansen showing an animal she encountered on the End of the World trek to Ka’ena Point on 2-16-16. The initial shots did not provide enough info, but I ask for more, and the all important last shot, of the belly, solved the mystery . It is BG (303)
