09/19/2020 Saturday Monk Seal Dailies

Today's dailies are brought to you by Team Billand, Marilyn and Lesley. Lesley's Ka'ena update is part two of the dailies.

Marilyn viewed Rabbit Island from 11:50 to 1:30 this afternoon. There were three seals on Island today during her observation.

On Left Point Beach were:
Weaner PO5 (Makanalani): weaner size, no tags, female belly, no applied bleach Marilyn best guess is  PO5 (RB12 Sadie's pup born on 6/5/20.  She was initially by herself, but soon after a young seal hauled out and joined her.
Unknown Juvenile Male - small juvenile size (guessing a yearling), new coat, male belly and 2 tags.  Marilyn was hoping this is RL47 Kamakana, RB12 Sadie's pup from 2019.
PO5 and the UJM entered the water together about 12:10 pm and were in the water until about 1:10 pm when they hauled out together about 100 feet Makapuu side of the 1BS and they both went into snooze mode.
By herself at Seal Rock Inlet was:
RK37 Huia: juvenile size, newer coat, light female belly, 2 tags and natural bleach on lower rear left side. This is RB12 Sadie's pup from 2018.
So it is possible, but certainly not proven, that all three seals on RI today were Sadie's kids.

Team Billand found Ka'ale just after 7 am. He was high up on shore by the trees. They could see the light line from his mouth but not any sign of a hook. They called the hotline to report.

At a nearby location they spotted another seal on shore. When they got there it was Benny RE74 high up on shore nice and dry.  The folks on the beach were asking if there were signs to put up to keep people away. Team Billand called the hotline.

At 9 am they came across RL20 Kalua who was in mid rocks along with RL70 Leina. It was difficult to see the both of them as they were well hidden in the rocks.
RL20 Kalua has a wound on his neck area, unclear what caused it. It looks to be pink and kind of a bubble. He is fine no sign of stress.
Leina was very hidden, they managed to get a few shots of her. Her molt continues, her belly looks clean and part of her face. Moving along quickly.
Kekoa RK72 was in the area, at the seal inlet. He was snoozing away, his broken tag was visible. He remained in that spot.

Team Billand returned to check on Ka'ale and now there are three seals hanging out. Aukai RL12 was with Ka'ale RH32.  Off shore was Benny swimming back and forth looking for a chance to land. He never did while Team Billand was there. (apparently Benny headed over to visit with Lesley see her update).

Team Billand went back to check on Kalua, Leina and Kekoa and now there was a fourth seal. R3CX Nalu was snoozing on the rocks. He is looking very healthy and robust.
