09/06/2020 Sunday STAY-HOME Monk Seal Dailies

Marilyn viewed Rabbit Island from Makai Pier from 11:45 am to 2:10 pm. There were nine seals on RI today.

At the back and left of LPB were:

Seal 1 - unidentified adult male (UAM), newer coat, dark male belly with either a nb or light umbilicus, at least one tag. This is likely the same seal in that area yesterday.

Seal 2 - unidentified adult female (UAF), older coat, brownish'green female belly and at least one tag.  This is presumably the same female as yesterday.  It could be RB12 Sadie returning to RI for her post-weaning molt. She weaned PO5 between 7/18 and 7/19.  It has been approximately 7 weeks since PO5 was weaned which means the timing is about right.

In a group of three near the front of LPB were:

Seal 3 - adult male, older coat, 2 tags. This may be RG32 even though his N11 was not visible.
Seal 4 - weaner size, slightly yellow male belly, no tags.. This may be PO1 or PO3.
Seal 5 - weaner size, female belly, no tags and N2 applied bleach on her right side. At one point both weaners were side by side in their "snoopy" poses.

Near the 1BS alone was:
Seal 6 - juvenile size, new coat, male belly and two tags. He went up and down the beach several times.

In a group of three near the 3BS were:
Seal 7 - larger weaner size, light female belly and no tags, making the ID as PO5.
Seal 8 - small juvenile size, new coat, male belly and 2 tags. He visited PO5 briefly and then went back closer to Seal 9.
Seal 9 - juvenile size, newer coat, female belly and 2 tags.
Marilyn mentioned there are several candidates for the unknown juvenile males-RK24 and RK47 are possibilities.

On the west side today RL70 Leina was seen early morning laying on the rocks inland and may have spent the night. Her tags and bleach were visible. Later in the day she was still there inland. But now she had company a male was with her but no interaction.

Aukai RL12 was seen foraging doing 5 minute dives. There were swimmers, divers and a kayaker in the area.

A seal was seen foraging at the outfall. This seal was green with a grubby older coat. There is a good chance this is Benny RE74.

Kawena RH36 was seen alone on the rocks snoozing. She is looking to be in great condition, lovely coat and chubby.

R3CX Nalu was inland and not far from RL70, but he never bothered her. His tags and natural bleach were visible.

RL42 Leia was seen onshore with people around fishing and swimming. Her coat looks good and she is looking to be a healthy size.
