07/18/2020 Saturday Act-With-Care Monk Seal Dailies

Today's dailies are brought to you by Lesley, Team Billand, and Melody.  I know Marilyn had a HUGE day with 10 seals on Rabbit Island today. At this time she is probably still working in her report and sorting through the 500 photos, so I will post it on it's own.  Lesley's Ka'ena update is part 2 of the dailies.

Team Billand found RF28 at 6:30 on the west side. He came in alone, vocalizing all by himself. They kept looking to see if there were any other seals in area but it was just him.

At 7 am they found Kaale RH32 foraging at the outfall. He was up to his usual bad boy behavior and stealing fish.  He remained in the outfall and Team Billand left to check for other seals.

After leaving Ka'ale they had spotted a seal across at another beach. When they arrived they found Nalu R3CX. There were clear footprints that were right up to him, and close by were lots of campers. Team Billand called him into the hotline and a little while later they spotted volunteer Melina had arrived putting up signs, just in time since some folks had just let their dogs off leash.

At 9 am Team Billand was looking around and a gentleman told them there was a seal in the water. The seal was smaller, green, red tags, but they couldn't ID the seal.  There were lots of snorklers, swimmers and paddle boards all in the water chasing after the dolphins.

At 10:30 they arrived at a west side beach and got to see a green seal galumphing up on the rocks. It was RL20 Kalua the little green goblin. He is still hooked but not in distress.
Volunteer Melina arrived on site and they talked while checking the area and noticed a second seal with R3CX.

On Team Billands last check at 2:00 they found RF28 and RL20 were both inland resting.  They heard some vocalizing and saw RL20 flick his hind flippers up in the air. They spotted RF28 making troubles with RL20. Almost like RF28 was trying to get RL20 to leave, but Kalua held his on.
At 2:45 RF28 left the area and RL20 stayed.  Team Billand called it a day.

Melody put together a beautiful tribute to Nanea for her first birthfay. (7/19)  It's beautiful, moving and so sad that we have lost both Nanea and Pohaku.
