1/3/2018 Monk Seal Dailies: (part 2) Lesley & Tammy Monitor Kahuku to Turtle Bay

Yesterday afternoon I got a call from a friend reporting a female seal with 2 red tags hauled out in a cove on his hike from Kahuku to TBR with family and friends. He asked me if she could be pregnant and ready to give birth we went over a list of Q&A and came to a conclusion that she wasn’t giving birth.
So I decided to go out this morning to check just in case, all bets were on “Ua Malie”.
Tammy offered to join me, we met at TBR left one car and drove the second to Kahuku. We started our hike just after 7:00AM.
Tammy “Eagle Eye” spotted the seal hauled out on the top side of a sand cove. Sure, enough there was RT10 “Ua Malie”. It took a while to get that T10 tag shot since there’s no more white ink on it. Downloading the photos at home her little NB at the top of her head was visible as well as her line scar on the right side of her neck. She is looking pretty and fat (can’t tell yet if hapai but could be).

Eagle eye spotted our second seal just as we arrived at the Elbow / TBR. A photo and zoom in on tag “G40”! Yes, RG40 “Holokai” was hauled out under the trees at the Elbow. I saw him Monday afternoon at KPt Big Cove. The kid sure moves around.
