1/16/2018 Monk Seal Dailies: (part 1) Benny, Buster, Kekoa & Kolohe, Rip,

Today's dailies are brought to you by Team Billand, Gayle. photographer Melody and Lesley. Lesley's complete update of "yesterday's news" is part 2 of the dailies.

Both Team Billand and photography Melody were out on the west side today and found Benny RE74 and Buster RV08 at two separate locations.  The first find early this morning was Benny. He was high up on the shore. The hotline was called. As people arrived they were given monk seal 101 information. Volunteer arrived on site about 8 am.

On Melody's way home she made a stop and found a seal just hauling out of the water at white plains. There was a group of boys surrounding it, so she went over and asked for them to back up and give the seal some room to come up on shore. The lifeguards got some signs and rope up. The hotline was called.  Melody left at 10:30 am.  Later that day Team Billand checked in and ID'd Buster by the scar over his eye, they noted he is looking healthy and that the beach was no where near the zoo it was yesterday. No volunteer on site while they were there.

Team Billand's other finds of the day included Kekoa Alii RK72 and Kolohe RW22 both snoozing together in harmony. They rechecked several times throughout the day and both males were still there together in the same spot.

While checking on the boys they spotted an adult seal with a "ding" on its back, red tags, foraging doing 6 minute dives. This critter was still foraging on their recheck and still there in the later afternoon. Must be some good grinds out there. They ID'd this critter as Rip RR70 based on the ding on his back and tag.

Team Billand also found RW02 PvKauai alone on a beach way on the westside. There were no
footprints no dog prints around him. The hotline was called. On their last check he was moving up higher due to the rising tide.

And then there was Ka'ale RH32 on the edge of rocks ready to dig out anytime. Team Billand decided not to stay as there were lots of folks in the area and they did not want to draw attention to him. He is looking handsome, healthy, and no new marks.  Barbara said " Glad to see he is back again, missed this butt head. he he"   All he needs now is a buddy to poke.  Team Billand also captured some amazing wave shots at yoks.

Gayle sent word there were 2 critters on Rabbit Island, she unfortunately deleted her photos. I guess we have to believe her.  She did manage to save one photo of Right Spot R016.
