11/24/2017 Monk Seal Dailies: Aukai, W14, U/U, RN14, Buster, Benny, Ka'ena, PVKauai, Kauai Kolohe, BG, Right Spot

Today's dailies are brought to you by Tammy T, Team Billand, Gayle, Photographer Melody.

In yesterday's news Justin T sent a news of a couple sightings during his Ka'ena Point hike on the Waianae side just before sunset. He saw 3 seals in good condition at the point. Two were ID'd by tags W14 and L12. He did not see any flipper tags or any obvious marks on the 3rd seal with a green coat.  I know L12 is Aukai tag, not sure about W14?  W14 - is RW02 PVKauai  retagged. If anyone has any clues please share. Thank you Justin for the images and update.

Tammy T did Ka'ena Point trek today solo and found three critters.  She came across Ka'ena RO40, Aukai RL12, and PVKauai RW02.

Team Billand searched Makaha surf and found no seal, but then drove to Makau Stree side and found Benny on shore at 5:50 am. He was near the Naupaka alone. The hotline was called and informed. Team Billand built a stick and rock line to keep folks out. Benny's molt has progressed quite a bit. Benny left the site at 7:45am and did not return.

Team Billand got to Nanakai/Guard Rails and found RN14 and RK36 Kauai Kolohe. The hotline was was informed. RN14 took off but RK36 remained alone. On an afternoon check Kauai Kolohe was closer to waters edge.

Next stop was Maili and there they waited and sure enough RN14 came up, middle rocks and went right to sleep. He remains on same rocks snoring his heart away alone in the cold chilly air.

Team Billands' last stop of the day after getting a call of a critter hauled at Plains. A second call came describing a smaller green seal so off they went hoping to find Lei Ola. There on shore was Buster V08. Happy to see Buster but disappointed not to find Lei Ola. Hotline was informed.

An email from Melody brought news of BG R303 at Turtle Bay. She was ID by her scars and no tags. Melody noted she was breathing quite heavily and restless by rubbing herself with her flippers. After a while she made her way down to the water, threw up, turned around and made her way back up shore.  Often times these critters will "spew" whatever doesn't agree with them, don't think it's anything to be overly concerned with. Melody did call and inform the hotline. Thank you Melody for the update.

Gayle found Right Spot RO16 at Kaupo Beach this afternoon.  She also got to spend some time with our pal Cianna.

Missed RN14 at Maili...

Its remarkable that our island has many Kauai seals here. Benny RE74, RW02 who has tags RW04 and RW14...

Then we have Squinty, Pohaku, Kauai Kolohe RK36, R3CU, are some that I can remember this morning. Amazing.

And one correction, Benny never left Makaha...we left site at that time, HE He. Benny remains by his Naupaka for another over night stay. He is coming along in his molt..we can see his incision once again.

Well, new day coming, here we go, lets see whose around that corner on shore...hope to find sweet HOOKED, MOLTING Lei Ola RH48...she left her spot, two days hope to see her again. Just love that girl.
