8/27/2017 Monk Seal Dailies: Aukai & RN14, Ka'ale, Kekoa, and Rabbit Island Critters

Today's Dailies are brought to you by Team Billand, Gayle, & Mrs. Whisperer. I hope you all had a wonderful weekend!

Team Billand captured a budding romance between RN14 and Aukai.
They first spotted a seal hauling up on shore at Nanakuli, they were able to ID Aukai and spent sometime talking to the kids and adults who were all too happy to see the seal. RN14 appeared hauled out next to Aukai. They both were in the water after some initial barks and slaps.  Seems we have a little romance between the two playing and tolling around together. ( Kind of like the old Kermit and Irma days).  Not sure what time but both eventually left heading west. Hotline was called twice.

Team Billand's next stop was at Maili, they waited patiently for RN14  and sure enough he came right in and just stayed on the rocks. He was there on their noon check and was still there at 3:00 pm.

While at Maili the found a seal doing 6 min dives, initially couldn't get an ID. They stay for a couple of hours and was able to determine Kekoa Alii RK72. Green muzzle, bumps on left side of body, scar on right side of face.  Team Billand left at 3:30 pm.

Lastly, Team Billand found Ka'ale RH32 stayed long enough to make an ID and they had to leave.

Gayle sent pictures of Rabbit Island with two animals.

In the meantime Mrs. Whisperer spent a couple of hours on the pier checking out Rabbit Island.  Marilyn spotted 4 seals over time.  First two unidentified males both with tags about 60 ft east of the 3rd blue sign. One of the seal "might" be Kainoa due to a shadow of a transmitter/camera patch on his shoulder.  Shortly after she spotted another seal at the rocky right beach noted as a juvenile.  Lastly she spotted a seal behind the rock at the left point beach. The animal was too large and too long to be Aka.
