1/28/2015 DB's Dailies: Kainoa@RI, Pohaku@Maili Pt., R5AY@Malaekahana, KC@Kaaawa, Haupu@Nimitz Cottages, RW02&Kolohe@Makaha, Ua Malie@Kawela

It would be 0926 before I found my first critter. It would prove to be Kainoa (RN04), snoozin’ at the log, 40 ft left of 1BS on Rabbit Island. He would later move down to cool off, and was my only find of the day. Gayle & Diane T., combed the quadrant but alas found nobody.

At 0657 Team Billand called to advise of Pohaku (RO28) at Maili Point.

At 1037 Dana checked in advising that she had sent photos from Sandy Miller & Irene Theofanis, of an animal in Kaaawa . Photo analysis showed the animal to be KC (RK28). This is her first sighting back on Oahu, after having gone to Kauai for a birth this summer. She was last documented by Val Bloy on Kauai, on 10-10-15. (unless Val has the ability to see into the future and report back to our current day, I will assume KC was last seen October 2014 :-)  She is the usual mass of scars, and has added a new wound, a healing CC wound to the left side of her head, just above the left eye. It was not there on Val’s shots.

During the same call Dana advised that R5AY was said to be at Malaekahana. A later conversation with Diane G., provided word that R5AY had been reported there yesterday, I’m unaware of any photo proof. Don Porter was told this morning that an animal was still there. Awaiting further word.

Dana forwarded a shot from Scott Sundby of what I believe to be Ua Malie (RT10), at Kawela Bay, though I’m hesitant to base an ID on a single marker. ????? At 1118 advised of a call about an animal at Nimitz Cottages.

At 1318 they confirmed the Haupu (RB24) fronting the Nimitz Pavilion. Bev reported Haupu’s departure at 1745.

At 1337 the Billands received a Hotline call about an animal in Makaha. Debbie intially responded , and at 1428 advised that there were two animals, but positive ID could be gotten. The Billands confirmed Kolohe (RW22) at 1553. At 1615 they got the RW02 ID. A witness said there had initially been 3, but one departed.

In the Yesterday’s News department, Ken Tingman sent shots of Ka’ena (RO40) & Luana (RN58) at Ka’ena Point.

Our first find was Pohaku on the rocks, alone and totally out cold from all the excitement of capture and release. She looked, PEACEFUL.

We had an appointment in town, got the call of another seal haul out somewhere at Nimitz. Lester called it in...we were just standing on shore talking story about the seals. THANKS LESTER...we so appreciate THAT CALL.

The seal was : Haupu, that sweet chubby female from Kauai. She was near the 1817 pavilion at Nimitz.

Ok, another report of a seal in MAKAHA. Well, thats going to take time to get there, but we had Haupu to care for.

Suddenly two people came by, HEY REMEMBER US BARBARA??? AH..we meet so many folks, I was a blank. But as the man and lady spoke...my pea brain finally functioned..YES I DO REMEMBER YOU GUYS. They told us how they helped keep an eye on Ewa Girl, Kermit and Irma. So since we needed to go to Makaha, I asked Paula and Trace from the mainland, if THEY COULD KEEP WATCH ON HAUPU. Oh sure we can..Rob and I told them the little history we know on Haupu.

In the mean time, I called Debbie of Makaha, if SHE could get out there and check on the animal on shore. Deb quickly went down, BARBARA...THERES TWO ANIMALS. BUT not sure who they are. Well, our brains started to go crazy, WHO COULD THEY BE????

Paula and Trace stood watch, and Rob and I made it out to MAkaha. DAM...TRAFFIC!!!!!!!! There is nothing more frustrating to be in TRAFFIC, especially when you want to get to a beach with TWO ANIMALS.

Finally, we arrived and there was good ole DEBBIE with her cute umbrella..and two animals. Oh my I dont recognize the smaller animal. I think the other BIG BOY IS: Kolohe!! Yep thats Kolohe.

Now this little guy, HMMMM. Deb points out there are two tags on the seal. Of course its covered with sand. It would take an hour to finally see a tag..RW02. Of course my glasses are in the car..I showed the shot to a man sitting on shore. He said, Oh my eyes arent that good either. But her read W02...And two kids were there, they made the same call..W02. Deb also confirmed..YES, W02. YEAH!!!!!

After that we just gazed at the animals, peacefully sleeping together. Just RELAXING.

Actually the guy said there were THREE animals, but some jerk was playing around with the seals and one took off. The guy called the cops, they came and made the gentlemen...LEAVE. AWESOME.

Oh and Bev Rexrode went to take care of Haupu for us till she left in the dark...THANKS TO BEV, Paula and TRACE...you did us a big FAVOR taking care of Haupu.

Ok, time to go HOME. DAY IS DONE. DEB remained with The two seals, till they left in the dark as well. God bless you MISS DEBBIE..the Makaha Warrior!!!
