August 26, 2019 Monk Seal Dailies

Today's dailies are brought to you by Team Billand and Melody.

Team Billand out at the pupping site at 5:45 and found Mom and Pup up by the big tree at the entrance. Volunteer Karen was on site and they were surprised to see them up so high up.

At 6 pm Mom and pup left the area and went for a swim to the other side of the area. At 6:17 they landed and nursed.

Then just before 7 am a critter came flying into the area. Team Billand's thoughts were this critter was RIP RR70, based on the scar over his left eye. He did nothing, just looked and off he went. They did not see him again.

Mom and Pup had another nursing session at 8 am. Then close to 9 they went into the water exploring Nanea's cove. They were out the for quite some time, left and went back again.
At 10 am they hauled out on shore for another feed and some sleep.

Noontime Pohaku they were in the water, when Pohaku went right and a deep dive. Pup was exploring Nanea's cove.  Nanea came to shore as usual for a feed, but Pohaku was gone. Nanea started barking and barking, went into the water looking, Pohaku not seen.
THEN at 12:23 Pohaku was seen coming from the open ocean, galumphed over the reef, barking loud to Nanea. They reunited, but Pohaku led Nanea out to sea, to the right. Team Billand lost sight of them at this time.

At 1:00 Mom and Pup were seen coming into the cove again, both barking. Came up on shore for a feed, rest and snooze.
At 3 pm Pohaku left the site, headed out to open ocean barking and barking. ( wonder if she was chasing something off).  15 minutes later Mom was back. Mom and pup went off to the right once more to open ocean.
Around 4 ish they came back to shore and had yet another feed, Nanea fell asleep.
Team Billand called it a day at 5 PM.  Needless to say today Mom exhibited some unusual behavior, maybe she is getting ready to head out.... maybe she is teaching Nanea yet another lesson in growing up monk seal style.  We shall see what the next couple of days will bring.

Team Billand certainly has had a front row see for this Mom and Pup experience.

Melody was also at the pupping site today from about 7 am to 3 pm. She experienced and watched much of what Team Billand did today. Melody did capture some video from noontime when Pohaku had left for about 20-30 minutes and the reunion between Mom and Pup. ENJOY.
