12/22/2015 DB's Dailies: RM38,Kimo Kai&Duke@Rabbit Island, Rocky@Kaimana,Holokai@Kuilima Cove, Nihoa@Turtle Bay, R5AY@Haleiwa Beach Park

At 0703 I found a D#8, 55% molted RM38 in the grass, 80 ft right of 3BS on Rabbit Island.

On my return at 0842 it was still just RM38, but at 0854 what would prove to be Kimo Kai (RT12) and Duke (RA12) hauled out together 30 ft left of 3BS. All would remain the entire day. That was the SE quadrant cast for today.

At 0918 posse member Christian Young called to advise that Rocky (RH58) was at Kaimana Beach. Signs and cones were out, but in speaking with Dana there was no indication of a notification, so who might have put the equipment out is a mystery.

At 1257 Team Billand called with the welcome news that Pohaku (RO28) had hauled out to Lanikohonua, KoOlina. With regard to Pohaku’s 4 day foraging session at Campbell Industrial Park, I was remiss in not conveying the Billands observations.
Many are concerned about an animal being in the water for an extended period, given recent history. Though I reported the Billands finds, I did not specify that Pohaku was continuously foraging, doing 5-6 minute dives, with 1 minute ups, which is normal behavior. Though there were no reported haul outs, the location is isolated so she might well have hauled out without the Billands being aware.
Today’s observed haul out is great news. The Billands advised that she appeared fat & happy (“chubby & plump” are the words Barbara used.

A Diane Gabriel text at 1404 reported that Don Porter was with R5AY at Haleiwa Beach Park, and that Carola was with Holokai (RG04) at Kuilima Cove, Turtle Bay.

A Dana text at 1617 reported Nihoa (R912) at Right Spot’s Spot, Turtle Bay.
