January 01, 2026 Thursday's Dailies

New Years Day is special to me, not for the obvious reasons but it was the day back in 2008 when I first met a Hawaiian monk seal. I didn't even know there were seals in Hawaii. Lets just say my life changed after meeting my first seal Chester.

They started their day at Pokai and spent some time waiting for seals to arrive. Finally they spot a seal foraging who they ID'd as RH48 Lei Ola. She then headed over to the rest camp side. 

They saw whales out further, also a boobie was foraging.  To add to their amazing sightings an Iwa flew over.

They were trying so make the most of their day since they were going to a family gathering.  Over at Kahe they found RG32 and RM31 Kai hauled out on the rocks. They were resting peacefully.  While checking out the site they got to see dolphins and whales out and about.

At Pokai they went one more time later in the day to see if there were anymore seals. They saw Lei Ola RH48 and Nalu R3CX on the rest camp side foraging. What they witnessed next was a paddler with a go-pro following the seals. They followed the seals while foraging as well as the seals in the open ocean. Very frustrating to say the least.
