01/01/2021 Friday Yesterday's News A Visit from Rocky

An email from Melody came last night after I had closed up the computer. Sorry I missed it because it was a nice visit from our beloved Miss Rocky RH58.

Melody got a call at 5 am on New Years Eve that a monk seal was on the beach. Melody headed out to check and arrived about 630 am and the seal was still there  and the sun was just starting to rise.  Melody called the hotline to inform. Initially she wasn't sure who the seal was, there were no tags and difficult to see any identifying marks.  Once the sun was up and the seal was nice enough to roll on its side, Melody could clearly see Rocky's natural bleach on her left fore flipper. She called the hotline to update them on Rocky's ID.

Rocky had chosen the busiest part of the beach to haul for the day. It wasn't long for people and their dogs to gather. Most of them had never seen a monk seal before so they were concerned it might be sick or in distress. It was a great opportunity for outreach which lasted most of the day. Several hours later Rocky started making her way to the water. But it took her several more hours to finally leave about 12:45. For Melody it was a memorable way to end this unforgettable year.
