July 16, 2019 Monk Seal Dailies

Today's dailies are brought to you by Team Billand and Lesley. Lesley's update is part two of the dailies.

Team Billand out bright and early, and headed for Ko'Olina at 6 am. They got to the site and there was already a zone up. They noticed the front of her was blocked off, so they adjusted the zone leaving it clear for her to enter the water without risk of entanglement.
She is very calm and alert, as there were lots of people around.  Team Billand called the hotline.
They stuck around to educate folk.  While talking with folks, Team Billand spoke to a few that had returned from the other day to check on her. ( and this is how it begins :-)
Pohaku doesn't seem stressed or restless, just looking at people who were loud. She would move down to the waters edge and keep cool.
After 4 hours Team Billand decided to leave the site hoping a volunteer would arrive.
Since she is very pregnant we are all hoping she leaves for Kauai, NOW! lol
Team Billand did get one last call from KoOlina at 12 asking if anyone was coming, they told them to call the hotline.

At 10:30 Team Billand arrived to a westside location and spotted a seal rolling in the water then hauling out. It was RN14 Kalani, he is alone and landed on the rocks. Team Billand didn't stay, as they wanted to look for more seals. When they returned to check on Kalani he was gone and the tide was extremely high.

Next stop for Team Billand was at 11:15 and they stayed through 1:30. Upon arrival they see RK72 Kekoa Alii in the play boy pond and RH36 Kawena to the left on high rocks. Same site but away from each other.

Kekoa started to roll in the pond and got out as if he heard or smelled another seal. He entered the shallows, then right over to Kawena. She got up looked at him and then postured. He just kept going to her, she turned over as if to let him know she was not interested, he stayed by her side.
She moved from him, he followed on her tail, and then, a big set of waves came in and both just held on and let the waves pass around them. This continued for a bit.

At 12:45 pm the waves washed both seals off the rocks, both entering the water. Kekoa was frantically looking for Kawena, but she was gone. He looked everywhere, and then he finally disappeared. Team Billand waited until 1:30 to see if they or any others would return.
They called it day and went to run some errands and cool off.
