July 13, 2019 Monk Seal Dailies

Today's dailies are brought to you by Team Billand, Marilyn and Lesley.  As you will read in Lesley's update she's been very busy.... but still made the time to catch us up on a weeks worth of seal data. Thank you Lesley for taking the time and catching us up.

Marilyn skipped the KP hike today and went to the pier to view Rabbit Island from 11:30 to 12:45.
Today's sightings included 3 Hawaiian Monk Seals, and 2 Homo Sapiens (lol) on the island today. The humans did not seem to cause the seals much concern.
One guy that walked by them, did try to keep his distance.  The two dudes were there the entire time Marilyn was observing the seals. She did send in a DLNR tip.
PO4 was located in the middle cliff area which is where he's been hanging out lately. He was ID'd by weaner size, light male belly and plump body. He did not seem to respond to the guy who walked by him several times.
UM #1 located about 20 ft right (Makapuu) side of the 3BS. Adult size, two tags, darker male belly. He did look up at the guy in the white kayak when he cruised by.
UM #2 located near SRI, was a sub-adult to adult size, two tags, lighter male belly. Marilyn's best guess is this is RG32.
While observing all the activity Marilyn kept an eye out on the Masked Booby nest. She did see the chick on several occasions.  Also since discovering them she has obtained the contacts with the seabird group.

Team Billand had a one critter day today. They found Kekoa Alii RK72 just before 10 am at a west side location. He was on lower rocks trying hard to stay in place. But the waves kept coming and by 10:45 he gave up and left.

Although Team Billand had a one critter today was a day to celebrate. I would like to wish Robert a very happy birthday.  He is truly an amazing man who has been looking after the seals, and his beloved Barbara all these years. I for one have the utmost respect for him and want him to know how much he is cared for.
