July 23, 2019 Monk Seal Dailies

Today's dailies are brought to you by Team Billand and an update from our Pal Val on Kauai.

Team Billand was out to see Pohaku before 6 am this morning. When they arrived both Mom and Pup were on shore snoozing together.  When PO5 Nanea got up she headed right for the water to swim, Pohaku barking at her, Nanea hesitated and continued to explore the shallows.

There was a feeding, more swimming for the pup (not mom), but Mom was watching Nanea the entire time. A couple of time Nanea was 15+ feet away from Mom. (Extremely independent given this is only day 4). Pohaku watched from the shore, didn't really leave her spot, and the pup was having a great time.

People began arriving, and continue to arrive, but they kept their distance. Volunteer Diane was on site and spent time educating folks. Robert spoke with the lifeguards to keep folks back from the seals and to get out of the water should the seals enter for a swim.

Team Billand headed out at noon to check on other seals. They returned at 2:30, and Pohaku and Nanea were up by some rocks snoozing. At 4:20 they called it a day, it was hot, volunteers were on site.

During their break from Mom and Pup, Team Billand headed out to a west side site and found romeo RN14 Kalani and RH48 Lei Ola sleeping in a pond about 6 feet apart. Seems this is becoming a daily routine for them.

Off to another west side location and there was RH32 Ka'ale RH32 alone. He looked like a green bean on the lower rocks. (something about this seal makes it easy to come up with a bunch of nicknames).
There was someone close by but they weren't bothering him, maybe they weren't aware of his being there. Team Billand stuck around for a bit, all was peaceful so they left.

Our Pal Val sent some pictures of PK5 (pup Kauai #5) and Momma Rocky from last Saturday 7/20.  Let's take a minute and  put things into perspective; Our three Oahu females that usually arrive on Kauai to give birth.
ALL gave birth within a 24 hour period.  KC RK28 pupped on Kauai on July 19th,  Pohaku RO28 (who usually goes to Kauai) stayed on Oahu and pupped on July 19th. THEN Rocky RH58 arrives on Kauai and pupped sometime between the evening of 7/19 and morning of 7/20.  WOW.... just WOW!

So enjoy some more pup pictures of our Oahu Gals and their pups!
