My heart is so sad about Kaikaina and now little U'ilani. My husband and I travel to O'ahu every April for the month and stay out at the base of Diamond Head. We do as much monk seal spotting as possible....we have sent in pics as the Vans from Can..we are Canadians but our heart and soul belongs to the islands of Hawai'i. In 2014 we were blessed with little U'ilani swimming in front of our condo and snacking on some Humu humu's. I was so excited to see and identify my first monk seal looking down from our ninth floor condo. Ironic after we had spent all morning out searching the "spots" for monk seals and we come home to find her right at our condo. It was a matter of being at the right place at the right time. We watched her gracefully swim and hunt for brunch right before our eyes! It was an amazing experience I will cherish always! I love this blog as it allows us to be part of the monk seal posse even from so far away! Our thoughts are with you all during this sad time. Thank you to Noaa and all you amazing volunteers that help keep the monk seals as safe as possible. Goodbye Kaikaina and U'ilani you will be missed!!

Thank you Darlene for your message.... it means a lot to know people are out there and do care about these critters.... As you can imagine many of the volunteers who have spent endless hours with these animals are left feeling hopeless.... I know for me hearing from you gives me hope that the work is worth it, that the more awareness we can raise the better. No it didn't help Kaikaina or U'ilani in this case but their little lives will not be in vain.
The fight to save a species must continue....

Thank you again for sharing...
