9/13/2014 Lesley's Ka'ena Point Trek

Marilyn, Dave a friend of hers and I did the Ka'ena Pt monitoring hike today.

When we were about to think that we were going to be skunked we saw RO40 "Ka'ena" do a swim thru the main pool. We had enough time to ID him by the pit scar on his back before he left but not enough to take photos.

We looked everywhere for other seals but didn't find any. When we arrived back at Birth Beach Mokuleia / KPt we found RW02 on the beach. He was moving around a lot and rolling, he ended up entering the water rolled there a little and swam very slowly towards Ka'ena Pt side. We were getting ready to leave when o a last look from the big rock I saw RN58 "Luana" hauled out sleeping on a new patch of sand.

Back on our side of the island, Marilyn called me to report T21M on Portlock Beach in front of the Pink House. I went out on my lanai and took 2 photos one of the bay without zoom and one zooming in on the beach - yuhuuu that's T21M 7 Marilyn on Portlock Beach.

Many Mahalos to all volunteers, beachgoers  and hikers who called the HOTLINE today to report seal sightings - some of them were reported more than once. Your calls, reports and photos help us ID the seals, document their whereabouts, assess their health and when needed send volunteers out to do outreach
Some of the seals reported today were:
  • RK82 "La'akea" @ TBR
  • RL42 @ Waianae side of KPt hiking from Yokohama Beach
  • R912 "Nihoa" @ Waianae side of KPt hiking from Yokohama Beach
  • RO28 "Pohaku" @ Eletric Beach
  • T21M @ Portlock Beach
