May 23, 2019 Monk Seal Dailies

Today's dailies are brought to you by Team Billand, posse pal Vicki, posse pal Anissa, and me. :-)

Team Billand checked the usual west side spots and only found RG28 on the rocks resting. He was alone and okay but a little close to one of the campsites. When they rechecked he was still there, tags showing and comfortable. I guess nobody was bothering him so there he stayed.

Team Billand made a ride out to the other side to visit with Luana RN58 and PO2 this afternoon. While they were there no one was around, and they got a little nervous, but after searching the area they found Mom and the kid way off to the right side, relaxing in a small pond.
By the time they got to that part of the site, the pair left and went for a swim. Just when Team Billand thought it wasn't going to be a good viewing day the pair returned to the shore. They observed a feeding session and then a little siesta. PO2 is growing fast and Luana a loving Mom. The pup took a ride on a few waves.  He actually did a great job diving while in the water, staying under for a bit.

Mail from our posse pal Vicki brought a couple of photos of Rabbit Island Mom and PO4. Too bad we crossed paths without knowing today.  Vicki did her best to capture what she saw and from what I could tell she captured a couple of critters that were not there later in the afternoon during my observation.

News from MCBH that one of our grand ladies KC RK28. So good to hear about her, and from what I been told she is looking pretty big.

I went to Makai Pier late this afternoon and the only critters were Mom and PO4.  At one point there was a head that popped up on the shore break in front of them. It appeared to be an adult size but it did not stay long enough to tell.   Mom and PO4 had one nursing session while I was there, mostly in snooze mode, although the kid did a couple rolls and moved around Mom.  I think at one point Mom rolled on PO4's flipper and the kid was stuck in place for a few.
There was about 30 minutes of distraction of a small dinghy getting close to the Island, and one diver entering the water and removing what I THINK was opihi. Soon after he returned to the boat he emptied a couple of handfuls from his shirt into a cooler.  Either way they did not disturb the seal or go onto the island.
Lastly just as I was getting ready to call the day by making the last pan of the island, a small juvenile had recently hauled out. No distinguishable markings just dark in color and small in size.
