9/28/2018 Monk Seal Dailies

Once again sorry for the delay.... my Internet connection has been intermittent which is making uploading photos difficult.  Team Billand's find for the day:

Ka'ale RH32 about 50% into his molt:
Still got some green to go.
RW22 Kolohe and his cue ball bleach mark
RO28 Pohaku looking quite pretty in her new coat
Pohaku on Team Billand's second check

9/27/2018 Monk Seal Dailies: (part 1) RO28, RH32, RW22, Cargo Net

Apologize for the late updates, but traveling and keeping up has been a bit more of a challenge. So I'll keep things short and sweet.

Dailies are brought to you by Team Billand and Lesley.
Team Billand found Pohaku RO28 at campbells in the morning. She was all the way inland, more than 100 ft. By the time they got over to her she moved down past the ropes. The workers were unaware she was there, as they thought she was a rock. She appears to be at least 75% into her molt.

In the early morning Team Billand found no seals at the outfall. When the went back they did find Kaale RH32 hauled out on his rock at a nearby beach.

Team Billand found Kolohe RW22 on a west side beach. It took them a few to properly ID him and they were surprised to see him. His signature cue ball bleach confirmed his ID. He's a healthy robust male.

Team Billand had reported a large Cargo Net out at Ka'ena West 40 mark a couple of days ago. Thanks to great team work DLNR, Lesley, and Team Dave and Tammy were hard at work. They hauled away a huge net as the storm was quickly approaching.  TRUE dedication and hard work!

9/27/2018 Monk Seal Dailies: Lesley's Ka'ena Update.

What a spectacular day break this morning. Our pal Barbara Billand described it perfectly: it was as having amber vison glasses on.
I went straight down to the beach to watch the sun rise in the company of handsome R330 "Squinty" who had overnighted. Must have missed a second seal by minutes ("Napua" ??), my focus was more on the sky than looking at the ocean for it.

I had a meeting in town where I spent most of the day, but made it on time for a check all the way to Hidden Beach before sunset.
R330 "Squinty" was still in front, it looked like he was on his way down to the waterline. Sure enough when I came back he was no longer there.
He is still looking thin, spending lots of time hauled out on the beach sleeping instead of foraging. So far it's normal and nothing to worry about.

Driving down to 10Mnts Beach I saw a seal at the far end of the beach getting closer I saw it was a female my thoughts went to "it must be Luana", but on a second look, wait the muzzle is green can't be her....those nipples that pit scar on top right one: IT's R303 "BG" !!!
She must have been there all day bc there were lots of wallows in the area.
I last saw her several weeks ago when she showed up with R333 "Unk" - probably coming back from Niihau. She looked thin then and now has put on weight. She may be molting very soon. Glad to have her back.

The ocean this afternoon looked like a big lagoon, I don't recall seeing it like this here. Beautiful yet strange.  More tomorrow ðŸŒº
