2-3-11 DB Dailies

The first order of business was to check Kaupo Beach Park, at 0630. There I found Right Spot , right where I'd left her last night. I redid the cordon. She has remained all day.

The Rabbit Island cast began with Sadie, left of 1BS, and Kolohe fronting the Left Greenery at 0900. Mojo would haul out to join Sadie at 1059. All remained the entire day.

Team Billand reported Kermit fronting the Snack Bar at White Plains at 1004.  They found RO28 at Maili Point at 1548.  Next they reported 2AW at Tracks at 1609.

Barbara called at 1615, having just spoken with Dera, and then Dera called at 1621. The news was awful, I'm sorry to say. Dera reported that RI37 had miscarried at Ka'ena Point this morning around 0950. The pup has been retrieved, and a necropsy performed. There were no immediate findings. RI37 was weak but apparently well at that time. This birth is approximately 4 months premature. RI37 had a stillborn birth on 5-16-10 last year. It was easy to attribute that event to the major wound she had sustained just a month before. This event is right out of the blue. Sad, is all that can be said.

2-2-11 DB Dailies

The Rabbit Island cast for today was interesting. Mojo was at 2BS, Duke was at 1BS, and Kolohe was at Seal Rock Inlet. RIP would make an appearance at 1321 to join Duke at 1BS. There was just minimal nuzzling interaction, before both settled down to snooze mode.

At 0750 one of my derelict, "permanent resident" Kaupo Beach Park posse members approached me with a 5th of his favorite breakfast Whiskey in hand. He mush mouthed a barely understandable report of a seal at the pump house at the east end of KBP. ( thank you posse member mush mouth) At 0751 I found Right Spot, and cordoned her off. She was last reported at MCBH on 1-27-11. She has remained all day. Ipicked up the rope at 1900. Right Spot remains.

Dera called at 1128 with the report of Irma out on the low tide reef fronting the beach at the Kahala Hotel.

Team Billand reported a swimming / foraging Kermit off the Nimitz Jetty and Kermit's Reef at 0653, but he never hauled out, swimming off toward the east. They did not find him again.

Team Billand reported RO28 at Maili Point at 1547, and found Benny at Kermit's Reef, NIM at 1647.

Duke and RIP ( amazing size difference - and to think, RIP means rabbit island pup).
Right Spot... and look at that, she has a spot on her right....

2-1-11 DB Dailies

Despite lots of looking, awheel, and afoot I was batting a big ZERO all day, until I went back to Spitting Cave for my second check of the day, at 1348. There I found Kolohe doing 7 minute dives. He had not been there on my morning check.

Since I was on a roll , and in the area, I decided to check the Kokee Flats, more inside Maunalua Bay from SC, since I thought Irma might be in the area after yesterday's Diamond Head haul out. Just as though I actually had a clue, therrrrre was Irma, snoozing comfortably at "Irma's Grotto" at the end of the Kokee Flats. I had not check this location in the morning because it was a 2.2 high tide and it would have been under water.

I returned to Makai Pier from 1500 to 1600 but Rabbit Island remained bare.

Team Billand checked in at 0936 with the report of RO28 at Maili Point.  They called again at 1007 to report Kermit fronting #1708, at White Plains.  Team Billand responded to a Dera call about an animal at Iroquois Point at 1306. At 1342 they confirmed Rocky at IRQ.

Dera called at 1320 to advise that Doniel had reported R5AY on the beach across from her house at Kualoa Point. Dera also advised of an U/U , red tagged animal in Mokuleia, near Dillingham. Dana called at 1422 to advise that the responding volunteer had found nobody, and that the animal may have been run off by house riders. Dera had said that the caller was taking photos, so there may be hope for an ID yet. I have nothing as of this writing.

I got a call from a posse member at 1803 reporting an animal in the water off China Walls. It was gone when I arrived, and darkness was nearly here, but some Polish tourists showed me close up face shots (in the dark), and though inconclusive I'd put my dollar on Kolohe. It pretty much had to be either him or Irma since both were in that area today.

Tracy forwarded photos from Mimi Olry on Kauai, of an U/M they had over there. He may be unknown over there but his Oahu fans will recognize the gnarly , little dude as our ol' pal Yoda (R302...Perm. ID #). He had last been seen on Oahu , at Shark's Cove on 2-27-10. He seems to have recently molted which would be consistent with last year's molt.
