August 31, 2024 Saturday's Dailies

Todays dailies are brought to you by Marilyn and Team R&B💕

Marilyn viewed Rabbit Island from 11:30 to 1:07 pm and there were six seals seen during that time.
On LPB was a Juvenile Female: juvenile size, new coat, light gray female belly and two red tags.
In the middle of LPB were two seals:
R416 Makali'i: sub-adult to adult size, old coat, tan male belly with darker patches and scars, no tags. N10 applied bleaches on dorsal and in front of rear flippers.
Near R416 was an Adult Female: adult size, older coat tan female belly and two red tags.
Out on rock flats between SRI and RRB was RP24 Mohala: sub-adult size, new coat, light gray female belly, two red tags and nb on LFF. At 12:55 pm Marilyn saw that she had left her previous position and at 1:04 pm she hauled out on the 1BS side of LPB.
The weaners RT19 and RT90 hauled out briefly several times. About 11:45 am the two weaners hauled out on the Lanikai side of LPB, but then re-entered the water. About 12:45 pm, RT19 briefly hauled out on the 1BS of LPB but RT90 stayed in the water, so RT19 rejoined him.
Then RT19 hauled out by R416 and the AF and seemed to settle down. Then at 12:52 pm, RT90 hauled out near R416 and the AF, and R416 challenged RT90 and chased him into the water.  A short time later, R416 went after RT19 and he entered the water. Later RT19 hauled out alone on the Lanikai side of LPB.

Team R&B only found one seal today. They found RH76 Kala at Pokai resting high up. She later moved down.
When they did a re-check in the afternoon she was still there but the waves were hitting her. Instead of going up to the sandy patch, she left and headed out.

In closing Team R&B got some sad news of an old friend who they thought of as a warrior seal bud, Debbie had passed away. They met up with her daughter on the beach and got the news. Debbie White was a dear friend of theirs for years and defended the monk seals all the time.
While on the beach and after getting the sad news they saw a Frigate Bird fly over. For them it was a sign from their dear friend.

August 30, 2024 Fridays' Dailies

Todays dailies are brought to you by Marilyn and Team R&B💕
Oh, I made my way this afternoon to Turtle Bay for a walk and came across a juvenile seal sound asleep on shore.  Older coat with some green, juvenile size, and tags. I never saw its belly or was able to read its tags.

Marilyn viewed Rabbit Island from 1:10 to 1:40 while there was a break in the weather.
There were five seals seen during that time.
Alone in the middle of LPB was R416 Makali'i L sub-adult to adult size, old coat, no tags and applied N10 bleach on dorsal size.
Just down from 1BS were three seals:
Weaner RT90 Manapua: cubbby weaner size and two red tags. Marilyn only had a view of his blubber butt, she has no doubt it is him
Unknown/Unknown: only a rear view of this seal, possibly sub-adult size, two red tags.
Weaner RT19: normal weaner size, light male belly and two red tags.
Alone at SRI was RP24 Mohala: sub-adult size, new coat, light gray female belly, two red tags and nb on LFF.

Team R&B started their day at the bay where they found RH76 Kala. She was on lower rocks resting. Her coat is really brown, leaving Team R&B wondering what's taking her so long to start her molt.
They also noted and reported the amount of loose dogs running around in the area.
While still on site they were treated to a surprise when another seal arrive. Originally thought it was Kaale but were wrong. Turns out to be RL20 Kalua who was bugging Kala. She gave it right back as if to tell him to get lost punk.
He persisted even entered the water and came back slow and steady, approaching her again. They had word for a bit then Kala moved up on her sand patch. He followed and behaved like a gentleman and they settled for a snooze.

From there Team R&B headed to Makaha where they spotted a green seal from afar. They took their time because of the waves and made their way over. Unfortunately their shoes got soaked. When they got closer they could ID RL42 Leia. She appears to be about 50% molted.
Then they spotted a second seal! Such a good seal day, especially since this turned out to be Kaale RH32 resting alone on shore. He was away for RL42, letting her rest. This is the first time they ever remember seeing Kaale at this location.

They took the ride out to yoks and was so happy they did, even with the crappy weather. There on shore was the very cute RP28, the three year old Kauai kid. He was just resting in the rain, along with many visitors looking on. Team R&B did a little bit of outreach.

Lastly just as they were cruising by the cliffs they spotted a seal. So they turned around and checked it out. There was RM31 Kai. They aren't sure if he's started his molt as he stayed in one position that wasn't helping.  The rain was arriving so it was time to call it a day.

August 29, 2024 Thursday's Dailies

Todays dailies are brought to you by Marilyn and Team R&B💕
A late email from posse pal Kathy sent some photos of RL12 Aukai. Apparently she is in full swing of her molt. Nice to have eyes on her.

Marilyn viewed Rabbit Island from 1:30 to 3:05 pm and there were six seals seen during that time.
Alone on the Lanikai side of LPB was weaner RT19: weaner size and shape, two red tags and light male belly.
In the back of the middle of LPB were two seals:
Sub-adult Female: subadult size, new coat, light female belly and unsure about tags.
Near the SF was R416 Makali'i: sub-adult to adult size, old coat, mottled male belly and several ventral
scars and blotches, applied N10 bleaches on dorsal and in front of rear flippers, pit scar in front of LFF.
Initially alone near the waterline of middle LPB was an Adult Female: adult size, newer coat, gray female belly, two red tags and scar mid upper chest.
At about 2 pm, chubby weaner RT90 Manapua hauled out in the vicinity of the AF and they ultimately touched noses and snoozed near each other.
Alone on the 1BS side of LPB was RP24 Mohala: sub-adult size, new coat, light gray female belly, two red tags and nb on tip of her LFF.

Team R&B got out early today and headed to the bay. The only seal they saw was RH76 Kala, on the lower rocks. She pooped, tossed her hind flippers in the air and then a crab came to sit on it.  OMG! the things they see!
They did a recheck later and Kala was still there but had moved on the sandy patch and was resting.

Then almost by accident they spotted a seal foraging by the jetty. Before they could get any information the seal disappeared. They did manage a couple of photos while it was foraging but they couldn't
make an ID, just that it had a new clean coat. It was reported as an Unidentified Unknown.

Lastly they saw the dolphins at another area. They were having a good swim and enjoying the open waters without any boats around to bother them.  Team R&B did see there were babies in the pod and were thrilled to actually see them jumping.
