10/31/2020 Saturday Halloween Blue Moon Monk Seal Dailes

Today's Dailies are brought to you by Team Billand, Lesley, Marilyn and Melody. Lesley's Ka'ena update is part two of the dailies.  In yesterday's news department, Melody's friend Sandra was at Ka'ena point and sent a picture of little Kami RL74. Melody included a photo of a "spooky" Rocky in spirit of Halloween.

Marilyn was out today checking the east side, at one point a gentleman flagged her down and told her of a small seal on the rocks. Marilyn went to check and found Nohea with her N2 clearly visible. She was first seen at 9:30 am and Marilyn did a recheck at 11:30 and then again at 1:45, she was in complete snooze mode.

Marilyn also found R016 about 12:40 this afternoon. She was ID'd by adult size, right side NB, upper

chest scar and lack of tags. She has a lot of green in several places so it appears she had not molted recently. She is looking good and seemed unpertubed by the folks around, thankfully there were two signs posted.

There was only one seal on Rabbit Island today. Marilyn spent over an hour observing an unknown unknown UU. Juvenile to subadult size, new coat and at least one tag. The seal never exposed its belly so she didn't know if it was a male or female. Only one critter today, how unusual.

Team Billand headed out before 6 am to see the moon setting at the bay. They were also surprised to see the fishermen were already out at the jetty. After enjoying the moon setting to start another day, they headed off to check on Benny.

They arrived at PC and found that Benny was still there. It was 6:30 am and the signs were up, Team Billand donated some rope to keep the Benny safe. They stayed on and educated a lot of folks that were up early. Most of them were out to check out the turtles. Benny continues his molt, slow going. Team Billand called the hotline and just after 8, volunteer Melina arrived. Team Billand left about 15 minutes later.

Team Billand headed over to another west side location and at 9:30 they found Kekoa Alii RK72. He

was already on lower rocks snoozing away, he would remain all day long.  Kawena RH36 was to the right at seal inlet, also snoozing. She stayed in the same spot all day. Lefty RG28 was to the right near water front rocks, squeezed in a water hole, snoring. (lol). And along with Kawena and Kekoa he remained in his spot all day.  While watching over the seals, they saw a UU passing by, it never landed and they were not able to get an ID.

Team Billand headed back to the bay at 10:15. When they arrived they saw Nalu R3CX foraging, passing the boats that were out there, and then passing with Lei Ola RH48. And then about noon he finally landed. Nalu is still hooked and the fishing line is still crinkled from the left corner of his mouth. Much to Team Billand's delight when Nalu landed he had a friend with him. They were thrilled to see Lei Ola.

Also foraging in the bay was RL20 Kalua. He was seen passing the small boats, swimming near swimmers who were yelling. (not sure if they were yelling cuz they were scared or excited).Ka'ale was seen at the jetty catching fish, boy can he eat.  And then there was Miss Aukai RL12 zipping all over the bay back and forth.

10/31/2020 (part 2) Saturday Lesley's Ka'ena Update

Diane and I had great morning monitoring KPt - alas we didn't see that Albatross again and still no whale sighting.

We started off with RW02 PVKauai overnighted down the beach. He may start his molt soon.
Next we found R303 BG and RL98 Lina side by side. BG's molt is ~ 15%
At the point we found a VERY healthy RN58 Luana lounging on a reef tide pool
Little RL74 Kami was freshly hauled out on the beach snoozing away.   More soon - Be Safe ðŸŒºðŸ˜·

10/30/2020 Friday Monk Seal Dailies

Today's dailies are brought to you by Team Billand.

Team Billand was out at 6:30 am checking out the bay. Today the water was choppy, wind blowing  which made it difficult to track who was who. Team Billand first seal was Ka'ale dashing back and forth at the jetty. Then there was Nalu R3CX with Lei Ola RH48 near the end of the jetty. Lei Ola looked to be trying to get away from Nalu but he would catch up with her.  Aukai RL12 was also in the mix and remained further out.  There was a point when all four seals would come together and fight, splashing the water, making it difficult to tell who was who.

Just after 9 Team Billand went to another west side location and found Leina RL70 up on high mid rocks snoozing. During their afternoon check she was gone, but then again maybe she found a good hiding spot.

Lefty RG28 had just come up near Leina, turning on his side showing off his cookie scars and lovely

white left digits. He was still there on their afternoon check.

While watching the other seals, they happen to turn and saw another seal coming in. It was RN14 Kalani, coming in without hesitation, looked up to the rocks and landed. He was still there on their last check.

Team Billand found Benny RE74 at 9:45 am this morning. He was way up near the trees at the entrance to the cove area. The zone was already up when they arrived. A tourist told them a team from PC put the zone up. Benny FINALLY appears to be molting. He was sound a sleep and didn't move much at all. He looks good there were no hooks or any signs of new markings. They called the hotline and a volunteer arrived just after 11.

At 1:15 Team Billand found R407 Kawika alone on shore. They made a stick zone to keep people away. The waves were clobbering him and he turned to move up to higher ground. Water is still brown and yucky.

Just before 2 Team Billand did one last check at one of the west side beaches. They spotted a seal to the left sleeping, after carefully looking him over they were able to ID Kekoa RK72 by his tag. They're not sure if he was there in the morning and they missed him or if he arrived later  The waves were washing over him slapping his fat body like jello.
