I was very fortunate today to head out to Ka'ena Point today with my buddies, Marilyn and Diane. We met up with Lesley and to make the day all the more sweeter I got to see Team R&B and junior sealette for a hug.
First of all the point in its own right is absolutely beautiful, but to be able to see three mom and pup pairs was absolutely amazing. So there was RL42 Leia who gave birth this morning to PO10. The pupsumbilical was still attached. There was a moment or two when the pup got washed up by the waves on the shoreline. It did fine and Mom was right there, but for the aunties it was a nail biter.
We also saw RN58 Luana with her pup PO9 who is 11 days old. Then there was RL98 and her pup PO6 a little female. I think Lesley said she was 35 days old.
We also saw two adult males out at NARS, they were RG28 Lefty and RG32. Lets just say I was grateful to be with my friends, because not only would I not know who I was looking at, I am not sure I would have even have seen them.
We were also treated to the albatross chicks that are getting big. Thank you Diane for sending me some of the photos from our day.
Once we left the NARS and went back to do a quick check on all the pups, we came across a small female snoozing on the beach. She was ID'd as RT98 Eha, one of last years pups.
Team R&B started their day on the west side where they found two seals early morning. They were up on the rocks, one was ID'd as RN04 Kainoa who is a big boy. The seal next to him was smaller, but Team R&B couldn't see if it had tags due to its position. There was a scar on left side of face/neck area, scratches on lower back. They thought maybe RL70 but couldn't be sure so it was reported as an Unknown Adult.
Since they weren't having much luck on the west side they decided to go and visit with some seals at the point. They first found RL42 Leia and her adorable brand new pup. PO10. The pup was active looking to nurse but was not latching on while they watched. They were there when the pup got moved about by the waves, which startled mom causing her to bark for her baby. They eventually made their way to higher ground. Junior sealette was also in heaven watching the new pup.
Then they headed over and saw RN58 and PO9. They noted where were no fencing on this side of the beach and no signs. They saw a feeding and then mom and pup go for a swim. The waters were a little rough, with the pup getting tossed, but mom was right there barking whenever she lost sight of it. Eventually they both hauled up for another feeding.
Lastly they saw the young seal on shore with a lot of green. When they were there they couldn't see tags or any distinguishable markings. As I mentioned before this little one was ID'd by Lesley as RT98, a little later.
Marilyn went to view Rabbit Island when we got back, she was there from 2:23 to 4:01 pm and there were four seals seen during that time.
In the middle of LPB was weaner PO3: weaner size, light male belly. He entered the water when RL08 swam by.
Out of the SRI rock flats was RL08 "bambam squarepants" adult size, older coat, pit scars above LFF, RFF, right mid dorsal and right rear side. He was gone from the rock flats at 3:55 pm and a short time later he showed up on the shoreline near PO3 who headed into the water.
When Marilyn started viewing there was a seal near the water line a short distance Lanikai side of the 2BS. He looked dark and was covered in dark sand. He was gone from the location at 2:43 and was seen a short time later in the water off LPB. At 2:57 pm, Marilyn saw R416 with weaner PO4 on the rock flats Lanikai side of LPB. R416 was ID'd by his small adult size, light male belly with distinctive scars. He appears very green. R416 and PO4 then moved around the rocks flats for the next hour, sometimes interacting. They were still on the rock flats when Marilyn left.
