Rabbit Island was once again certified Monk Seal free today. The only SE quadrant critter was Kaiwi, whom I found snoozin' in her secret spot, at Lanai Lookout. She has remained all day. The aunties were all stoked !!

Team Billand reported T15M fronting #1944, White Plains, at 0837. They called again at 0924 to advise that he had departed. At 0943 they found him again, foraging off shore of #1943. He hauled out again fronting Lifeguard tower #2 at 1012.

Team Billand checked in again at 1520 to advise that Kermit (R012) was hauled out fronting #1806, Nimitz Cottages.

Dera called at 0921 to advise that an U/U was reported in the trough at Magic Island. I never heard another word about a response. My dollar is on Rocky, but ????

At 1630 the Billands checked in with the report of Ewa Girl (RS00) at Wind Sock, Kalaeloa Beach. She had last been seen on 1-25-12 at the Reef Runway.

It was a busy little Monk Seal Sunday. At 0709 I found what would prove to be Buster (RV08), just hauling out to 3BS on Rabbit Island. He would remain all day.

At 0855, Kathy, Gayle and I were doing the morning Spitting Cave check, when Kathy's eagle eye spotted Kaiwi (RK96) to the right of the Big Rock. All the aunties were notified, and a good time was had by all.

Team Billand checked in at 0740 with the report of T15M continuing to rot, fronting #1944, White Plains.

At 0754 they called again with the report of Irma (R010) just down the road, at Wind Sock, Kalaeloa Beach.

Next came a Billand call reporting Kermit (R012) at Kermit's Reef, on the west side of the Nimitz Jetty.

Lastly, at 0907 Team Billand called with the report of Pohaku (RO28), once again at Secret Beach, KoOlina.

Mrs. Whisperer did the Ka'ena Point trek, with our visitors in tow, and they were fortunate to find Ka'ena (RO40), Kerby (RW08), Noa (R6FI), and 761, at the end of the world.

As a side note to the KP trek, Dana had called last night with a hotline report of an animal at Ka'ena Point with a wound on a hind flipper. Confirming photos have not yet been received. No wounds were seen on today's cast.

Kelly Girl called at 1519 with the report of Ua Malie (RT10) at High Rock, Kahuku.

Dera called at 1611 with the report of an animal at Beach Rd, Diamond Head. Lesley confirmed the Rocky ID. Lesley later reported that it looked like Rocky was overnighting.

An evening call from Dana reported that RI37 was in Mokuleia today.

Despite many a mile on the Kaiwi Kuest, she was a no show again today.

The one and only SE quadrant find came at 0900 when I found Rocky (RH58) logging in the shallows off shore of Irma's Grotto, Kokee Flats, Portlock. She would do a leisurely swim , 300 yrds down the flats to the Kaiser Estate dock, and then move back toward the grotto. At a point approximately 100 to 150 ft left of the access path, she hauled out at 0958, and has remained there the rest of the day.

Team Billand called at 0727 to report T15M fronting #1706, White Plains. At 1115 they advised that he had entered the water, but at 1134 he hauled out down the beach, fronting #1943.

The Billands mentioned that the Cobers were there, so to them and any and all who served today.... Thank You.............Very Much !!!

At 1158 the Billands reported Kermit (R012) on the Ewa Beach side of the east end WP perimeter fence.

Dera called at 1100 with the report of Irma (R010) at Ewa Beach Park. The Billands advised that Clay Gates was responding.

The day began at 0630, but it would be 1024 before I finally found a critter. It would prove to be RIP (RR70), 60 ft left of 1BS on Rabbit Island. It would take 3 hrs to finally get that ID. I'd last seen my first born, at RI, on 1-24-12. He would remain the rest of the day.

Posse member Gayle called at 1215 to report an animal thinking about hauling out to the Kokee Flats in Portlock. Of course my first thought was Irma, but lo and behold when I arrived at 1239, and looked from afar, I knew "that ain't no Irma". Maybe 2 Irma's , but nope... it was a very chunky Rocky (RH58). She was just a few feet from Irma's Grotto at the far end of the flats. The girl is definitely round & firm & fully packed. In case you are wondering , I've got my dollar on 5-11-12.

Dana called at 0818 to advise that RI37 was at Alii Beach, Haleiwa today. Communication with Kelly Girl, and confirming photos, by Elizabeth, said it was most definitely RI37.

While on the subject thanks to Debi Kelly for the photos, and the other responders who dealt with RI37 at Laniakea yesterday.

At 0840 Team Billand checked in with a report of T15M fronting #1706, and Kermit (R012) at Kermit's Reef on the west side of the Nimitz Jetty.

At 1338 the Billands found 2AW at Tracks.

At 1430, for the 3rd day in a row the Billands found Pohaku (R028) at Secret Beach, KoOlina, and once again they had to deal with guys that just won't play the game. Sad !

The Irma,Kaiwi&Benny Quest began at 0630. All but Irma would ultimately be found.

At 0834 on my 2nd Rabbit Island check I found what would prove to be Sadie (RB12), snoozin' behind the sand dune and Morning Glory, 40 ft left of 1BS. She would beginning moving down at 1020, allowing the ID at 1025. She has remained there all day.

At 1015 posse member Kathy called with the report of Kaiwi (RK96) at Spitting Cave. She had not been there earlier when Gayle and I were there. When I arrived at 1115 I confirmed the Kaiwi ID. She would wander off, further into Maunalua Bay around noon. She was not seen again today.

At 1400 posse member Teri called with the report of an animal at Spitting Cave (no transmitter). When I arrived at 1425 I confirmed the Benny (RE74) ID. He was still there when I departed, doing 7 minute dives.

Team Billand checked in at 0831 with the report of Kermit (R012) fronting 1708, White Plains, and T15M fronting #1706.

Dana called at 1345 with the report of RI37, once again at Laniakea today.

At 1538 the Billands reported Pohaku (RO28) once again at Secret Beach, KoOlina.

Barbara called at 2000 to say that Team Billand's computer is dead. Their pup is workin' on it. Check da' blog in the morning for Billand shots.... I hope. We all hope!

Yes my friends... four years ago the very first post was made.... and every night since then (well 99% of the time). I am thrilled the blog has grown along with the volunteers looking after the monk seals. Meeting great people through the blog as well as getting news about seals on the outer islands are some of my favorite moments. But in the end I have DB to thank because without him, the blog just wouldn't be the same. When I asked DB many moons ago if I could post his "dailies" I don't think he realized what he was in for.... I love you my friend.!

The Irma & Kaiwi Quests began at 0630. Both were no shows in the SE quadrant (more Irma news in a moment).

At 0747 I arrived at Spitting Cave to find Gayle jesturing that there was an animal on the right side of the Big Rock. Sure enough we found what would prove to be Benny (RE74) doing 6 minute dives. Benny's presents was quite a surprise. He had been seen at Wind Sock on 2-4-12, and today he is here. His last visit to this end of the galaxy had been an ADs/Sandy Beach visit on 10-11-11.
He has remained at SC all day. Tomorrow ????? During today's observations two female , one man paddlers came by. Benny swam right up to one of them. The interaction was just a second or two and the woman had a close encounter of the ? kind. Benny, horn dog that he is, digs chicks... species is of no consequence.

At 1020 on my 2nd look at Rabbit Island I found Buster (RV08), 10 ft right of 1BS. He would enter the water at 1030, and I did not see him again today.

At 0715 Team Billand reported a 60% molted T15M, high and dry, fronting #1707, White Plains.

At 0815 they found Kermit (R012) at Kermit's Reef, on the west side of the Nimitz Jetty.

Team Billand called again at 1150 to advise that they were with Pohaku (RO28) at Secret Beach, KoOlina. It sounded like an even bigger Zoo than usual.

As I said at the top, I spent the day on an Irma Quest, based on the fact that she had been in Waikiki yesterday. I never found her. I got Karen Rohter mail at 1535, advising that she had been in Waikiki for a luncheon get together and just happened upon a cordoned off Irma near 2F. Apparently, the police had cordoned her off this morning. According to Karen , Irma departed at 1410. I had never heard a word about the haul out, from any source, until Karen's email, but according to Karen she and two faces from the crowd, Stephen and Giselle maintained law and order. That is all I know about that.

Dera called at 1646 to advise that R5AY had been reported near Hukilau Beach in Laie. ID was by tag.

Jan Dill checked in this evening to advise that she had found RI37 at Laniakea today.

Benny ! Stick with your own species! I know there aren't that many of you left, but this is not the answer!

Some rain...some sun... lots a wind, with a goodly cast of critters. At 0814 I peered over the rock ledge at Lanai Lookout, and there was Kaiwi (RK96) nestled up next to the cliff, high and dry. She has remained all day. Zeeny weathered many a down pour with the little girl today.

I arrived at Makai Pier at 0845 to find an empty Rabbit Island, however on a pan at 0918 at a place I call "Last Greenery" I found what would prove to be Buster (RV08). It is rare to find animals at this location, which is on a rock area, just 100 ft left of the rabbit's nose. A very inhospitable place, but now and again critters do haul out there. I think this is the 3rd occasion in 11 years.

Dana called at 0653 with the report of an animal near lifeguard stand 2F in Waikiki. Both Dana and Lesley would confirm the Irma ID at 0917.

At 0740 Team Billand checked in with the report of T15M and M&M (R020) together once again at #1707, White Plains.

At 0746 they reported Kermit (R012) at lifeguard tower #1 at White Plains.

A 0946 Dera called with the report of RI37 at Alligator Rock, on the North Shore. She had apparently hauled out around 0800. ID was by tag.

Team Billand checked in again at 1515 to report 2AW at Tracks.

At 1606 the Billands found Pohaku (RO28) at KoOlina.

Well, it was a little something for everybody today. A pouring rain morning, and a bright and sunny afternoon. The elves and I were out there as usual, but Kaiwi was a no show today.

At 0946 on my 2nd Rabbit Island look, I found Buster (RV08), once again on the water front rocks, 50 ft left of Seal Rock Inlet. He had the place all to himself again today.

Team Billand checked in at 0720 to report T15M and M&M together, fronting #1707, White Plains.

Dana called at 1030 to advise that R5AY was in Hauula today. She also mentioned an U/U at Sunset Beach. She called again at 1314 to report that the Sunset animal was RI37.

In the Yesterday's News department, Tracy sent photos from Eric Brown on Molokai, showing the first shots of CeeCee (R320) since he was last sighted, by Diga, at Ka'ena Point on 5-22-11. Apparently, he has been seen over there for a few months now.

2-5-2012 DB's Dailies and the Brazilian with a Mission

The Kaiwi Krew and I were out doin' a lot of lookin' but no findin' . My only critter of the day turned out to be Buster (RV08) whom I found on a pan of the beach at Rabbit Island at 1048. He would be the only RI resident today, and my only find.

Posse member Lesley made my day. She initially called at 1505 to advise that some kids had told her they had seen a small seal with a transmitter somewhere in Portlock. Lesley checked the area and was batting zero until she spoke with the kids again, and got a more specific location. At 1600 she called to report that she had found Kaiwi (RK96), at "Fingers".

Now I ain't sayin' how the mission was accomplished, but Fingers is a now closed access path between China Walls, and Kokee Mini Park. The access had been close by the C&C long ago, however surfers had cut a hole in the chain link fence , so there was still a way to get to the spot. A few weeks ago the C&C put up new fencing so there is no longer a way to get there from here, unless you are an adventurous Brazilian on that mission. As I said, Lesley found Kaiwi at Fingers.... 'nough said !!! Obrigadao !!!

Team Billand called at 0716 to report T15M fronting #1708, White Plains. Shortly thereafter (0720) they reported that Kermit (R012) had joined him.

The Billands checked in again at 0731 to advise that posse member Clay Gates had called them to report that Rocky (RH58) had overnighted at Iroquois Point.

Yet another call from the Billand came at 1025 to report that 2AW had hauled out fronting #1775 at White Plains.

An over kill day at White Plains you say..... well, the ride ain't over yet folks ! At 1335 the Billands called again to report that M&M (R020) had just hauled out to join the crowd. Barbara tells me that ties the WP record.

Posse member Kelly Evans checked in to advise that she had found La'akea (RK82) at the Campbell Bird Refuge today. Thank You Kelly Girl !

It was lookin' darned dismal in SE quadrant Monk Seal circles until a call from posse members Zeeny & Patrick (Z&P) at 1322. Rabbit Island had been a bust all day, and despite many a mile traveled, including 2 stops at Lanai Lookout,and 2 Spitting Cave checks, I was batting a giant zero....until 1322 !

Z&P called to advise that they were with Kaiwi (RK96) at the Lanai Lookout Cove !!! When I arrived I went to the same spot I'd done the previous 2 checks from, but this time saw Z&P below me. Sure enough from my vantage point she was invisible. Only when I craned a bit further over the edge, did I see two tiny flippers and tags, further craning, brought the N19 bleach and a transmitter.

All of us in the Kaiwi Krew have been thinking that she had to be hangin' out somewhere in the Bamboo Ridge area, since she has been a no show at Kaiwi Cove for 10 days now, and maps show her remaining in the area. Today, I think that mystery has been solved. I've checking this spot everyday,of late, which is why I'd found Buster yesterday. Today Buster was a no show but Kaiwi was a grrreat find. Giant Kudos for Z&P for going that extra mile in the Kaiwi Kuest !! Ya' Done Good !!!

Team Billand checked in at 0628 to advise that T15M was still at #1708, White Plains. At 0636 they reported Kermit (R012) near lifeguard tower #1 at White Plains (Saturday at White Plains..... where else would he be ? ) . From all reports it sounds like it was the usual ZOO !!!

At 1148 the Billand called to advise that posse member Clay had called them to report Rocky (RH58) at Iroquois Point.

At 1458 the Billands called again, this time with the report of young master Benny (RE74), snoozin' comfortably at the bunkers just west of Wind Sock, at Nimitz Beach.

Missus Whisperer is on the mainland this weekend for her Mom's 95th ! Not to worry fans, posse member Lesley did the Ka'ena Point trek and called at 1222 to report 761 and Kerby (RW08) together, and Ka'ena (RO40) at a separate location at the end of the world . 2-4-2012 Lesley Makes the Ka'ena Point Trek

Hello all,

I hiked out to Kaena Pt today from the Yokohama side with some friends that have just moved to HI and have already signed up as HMSRTO volunteers. Liat, it will be great to have you on the team

It was an absolutely beautiful day, the sea was a little rough, big waves were rolling in, whales were EVERYWHERE blowing, tail slapping and breaching. Out at the point albatrosses by the dozens, they looked like popcorn, had the pleasure to see my first chick of the season.

I found 761 in her usual place and Kerby not far from her. Some hikers mentioned that they were higher on the beach an hour or so before I arrived. I walked up towards the Northshore side and found Kaena on the side of the big pool on the right side of the runway.

To Barbara & Robert: I saw Abraham (one of the lifeguards on our way out and he send you a hello. As I had HMSRTO cards with me I gave them some that their are going to put in the lifegards towers along the West side.

I was batting a giant zero until I chanced to check the Lanai Lookout Cove at 1111. Lo and behold there was Buster (RV08) snoozin' away the day on the flats below me. He is a regular user of this spot. I was hoping to find Kaiwi with him, but alas she was a no show again today.

At 0734 Team Billand with what has become daily Kermit (R012)&T15M report at #1708, White Plains.

At 1136 the Billands called with the report of Irma (R010) fronting #5197 at Iroquois Point.

An afternoon email fron the Kelly Girl brought news from one of her posse reporting that he had seen La'akea today at the Campbell Bird Refuge. There was a photo confirming the ID, but I can't figure out a way to download it. It is definitely La'akea, showing the N31 bleach.

Once again today, Rabbit Island was Monk Seal free. In fact the SE quadrant was a bust, until Gayle's call at 0748, reporting an animal at Spitting Cave. It took a bit of observation, but it turned out to be Buster (RV08). He had last been seen at Blowhole on 1-27-12. Welcome back Kaiwi... I am sure all your Aunties and DB have been worried about you, or at the very least missing you.

As we were watching Buster do 6 minute dives, who suddenly appeared by the lovely Kaiwi !!! She too had last been seen on 1-27-12. Once she arrived foraging was out the window and play began and continued for the next couple of hours. Posse member Kathy called to advise that Buster wandered off further into the bay at 1025, and Kaiwi's last sighting was at 1039. There was nobody there on my 1500 recheck. Multiple checks of Kaiwi Cove were also negative. Tomorrow ????

Team Billand checked in at 0812 to advise that Kermit (R012) was fronting #1707, and T15M (D#3 molt 5%) fronting #1708, White Plains.

There are two items in the Yesterday's New file. Kelly Evans advised that a posse member of hers reported having seen La'akea (RK82) near the Campbell Bird Refuge yesterday evening. The ID was made by the N31 bleach. There were no photos taken.

Dera had advised yesterday that posse member Eileen had reported Kekoa (RK72) with line coming from his mouth at the Reef Runway. Dera said Sean & Mark were responding to assess. Conversations with both Dera and Tracy today, brought word that there had , in fact, been a small hook with line at the right corner of his mouth. Drs. Bob and Greg responded and the hook was removed without incident.

Another day in the Kaiwi Kuest, and another zero to report. Dera's latest map continues to show the girl ranging in the SE quadrant, but she must have a new Naupaka in her life, because Kaiwi Cove has been Monk Seal free for several days now. Of course, the quest continues. Gayle and Terry, unstoppable adventurers that they are, even covered the Pele's Chair area in the estuaries, and checked the Makapuu tide pools. These two are animals !!!

At 0732 posse member Gayle called to advise of an animal foraging near the ladder at Spitting Cave. When I arrived at 0750 I confirmed the Pohaku (R028) ID. This is very probably the same animal that posse member Terry has been reporting each night as darkness fell. She was doing 5-6 minute dives. Posse member Kathy called at 1014 to advise that Pohaku appeared to have departed, heading east.

Team Billand checked in at 0647 to advise that T15M & Kermit (R012) where once again fronting #1708, White Plains.

They would report another White Plains animal at 1057. Posse member Clay Gates responded and cordoned off M&M (R020).

The Billands found Benny (RE74) at Makaha Beach, fronting the life guard stand at 0855.

Dana called at 0910 to advise that volunteer Azlina had reported RI37 on the beach behind her house . Confirming photos have been received.

Dana called again at 1054 to advise of an animal behind the condo just east of the Elk's Club, in Waikiki. DIGA (Diane Gabriel was at the Aquarium, and went over to deal with Rocky (RH58).

Speaking of Rocky, in the Yesterday's News department , Liz Weske's photos from yesterday's haul out behind the Aquarium arrived today. Surprise...Surprise...It was Rocky !

It was beginning to look like another one of "them" days, a D#2 skunking, but on my 1346 recheck of Rabbit Island I found that little Nani (RK60) was home again. She had last been seen on the Mokes on 1-14-12, and her last Rabbit Island visit was on 1-12-12. She appears happy and well.

Thank you to the "elves" who scoured the SE coast on the Kaiwi Quest, with no luck again today (D#7 without a sighting). Dera's map data says she is still somewhere out here in this quadrant, but she has certainly found a new hangout spot. Of course , the quest continues.

Team Billand checked in at 0733 with the report of T15M and Kermit (R012), once again fronting #1708, White Plains. At 1215 first Sean and the Barbara called to advise that Sean had gotten a left mid body N4 bleach on Kermit, with a half girdle. Thank You Sean ! Kermit had been dubbed N4, and initially bleach on 12-2-05. In 1-28-06 he was re-bleached, but he has been without bleach again until today.

Team Billand checked in again at 1350 to report that T15M has finally begun to rot. His D#1 bleach begins in the scratch arc of his good flipper, and is 1%.

At 1300 Ocean Safety called to advise of an animal on the ewa side of the Natatorium, which is actually behind the lawn of the Aquarium. I advised Dera & Dana, and Dana reported that Liz had gone to check the animal at 1315. No ID was gotten, but photos will hopefully answer the mystery.

At 1315 Dera reported an animal at Laniakea. Dana called at 1416 to advise that R5AY had been ID'd by tag.

Despite miles and miles covered by myself and the "elves" there were no critters sighted in the SE Quadrant today, from Rabbit Island to Maunalua Bay.

Team Billand called at 0715 with the report of T15M once again fronting #1708 , White Plains, with Kermit (R012) in the shallows and beginning his haul out. Both would remain there the rest of the day .

A glimmer of hope of not being skunked today came with a call from Whole Foods cheese-wiz & strange brew afficiando posse person Terry, at 1807 saying that she had an animal at Spitting Cave, near the ladder, which did not appear to be Kaiwi. When I arrived I found nothing. Terry said the animal had moved to the right side of the big rock, and that there may have been two critters, though she never saw two at the same time. Bottom line..... skunked for da' day!

Bodysurfer posse member Mike, called at 0623 to advise that an animal was just hauling out fronting the Pipe Littles break at Sandy Beach. When I arrived at 0630 I found Irma (R010) waiting for me. I got her cordoned off, and she has remained all day. Irma departed of her own volition at 1745.

While at Kaiwi Cove, with posse member June at 1115, Eagle Eye June saw just a snippet of a light rock, amongst the dark rocks, 150 ft east of Kaiwi Cove. She brought it to my attention and naturally we were thinkin' Kaiwi, however when I got out there it turned out to be Pohaku (RO28). She would remain there the rest of the day. Nobody had a clue she was there. June said Pohaku was still there when she departed at 1600, however she was gone when I arrived at 1630, with the rising tide.

Those were to be the only two finds in the SE Quadrant today. No Kaiwi, and no Rabbit Island critters.

Team Billand called at 0749 to report T15M, once again fronting #1708 at White Plains. A bit later they advised that White Plains Beach, and Nimitz Beach were being shut down due to a shark sighting. The shark was said to be over 10 ft.

Dana called at 1116 with the report of an animal in the trough at Magic Island. Posse member Kathy responded and called at 1307 to confirm Rocky (RH58).

Also at 1116 Diane Pike, my very most favorite Molokaite, called to advise that she once again had my boy Duke (RA12) over there. Today he was with R306 and two others.

Dana called again at 1412 to advise that Reef Runway posse member had called with the report of both Ewa Girl (RS00) and son Kekoa (RK720) 50 ft apart on the birth beach at the Reef Runway.

At 1510 Dana called again to advise that posse member Kelly Evans had found Right Spot (R016) at Right Spot's Spot, Turtle Bay.

As usual it was lots of miles, trod and driven, but by end of day, the only pinniped in my life was Irma (R010), whom I found snoozin' in Irma's Grotto on the Kokee Flats, Portlock. She was half submerged with her head under water, lifting a nostril now and then to breathe, but that was the extent of her activity.

We found no Kaiwi, nor was there anybody on Rabbit Island once again today. A 1600 phone conversation with Dera brought news that Kaiwi appears to still be in the Kaiwi Cove / Sandy Beach area,as of last night's transmitter data, but she must have a new Naupaka bush, cause we sure didn't see her between Sandy Beach and ADs. Tomorrow ?????

Team Billand checked in at 0750 to report T15M for the 4th consecutive day, fronting #1708, White Plains. At around 1100 Kermit joined T15M within the cordon, and they have remained there the rest of the day. Thanks to Clay for being on it as usual.

It's Saturday, and that means that Missus Whisperer (Marilyn) did the Ka'ena Point trek once again. She reported humgoneous waves and a single critter. It was Kerby (RW08). He had the place all to himself (well him and a gazillion visitors). Marilyn said mostly everybody was cool, and gave him space. I always enjoy Kerby shots, since he began as a Rabbit Island boy, 3 years ago. I'm sure the Kerbys (Terri & Terry) will be stoked to see their namesake.

I was on the road early , as usual, but it would be 0810 before I ever encountered a critter. Actually, Gayle was bummed because she had been sitting at Spitting Cave for a half and hour, when I walked up to join her, and in less that 5 seconds of my arrival there were Kaiwi (RK96), and Irma (R010) in separate locations at Spitting Cave. It's about time I won one, usually its Gayle who does all the finding. Kaiwi would be in our lives for maybe 30 seconds. We saw only the single up, and then she disappeared for the day. Irma has remained all day. She was still doing 7 minute dives on my 1400 SC check.

While on the subject of Kaiwi, Dera sent a map of Kaiwi's activities last night. Apparently she had been in, and maybe even hauled out in Hanauma Bay late last night. Just because of that data, I did a thorough Hanauma Bay check, mid day, even venturing down to Toilet Bowl. Unfortunately, I have nothing to report except sore knees. I also checked the "secret cove" at Lanai Lookout (only me, June and a million scuba divers know about it). Alas, it too was Monk Seal free.

At 1331 on my 3rd look at Blowhole, I found Buster (RV08) down in the cove on the Sandy Beach side of the lookout. It was the same location as yesterday, but today he was better hidden from the public.

Despite lots of hours at Makai Pier, I found nobody on Rabbit Island today.

Team Billand checked in at 0710 to report an overnighted T15M, fronting #1708, at White Plains.

At 0954 the reported that Kermit (R012) had hauled out just down the beach, fronting #1706, White Plains.

At 1326 they called again with the report of a 50% molted 2AW at Tracks.

Dana checked in at 0844 to advise that volunteer Bonnie had found R5AY behind the Polo Field, in Mokuleia.

At 0705 I found an animal tucked up against the Right Middle Cliff area, on Rabbit Island. Though I had not one single shred of evidence, I called NOAA personnel to get the ball rolling, since I had a strong feeling that it was Kolohe. When they got out there at 0940 they confirmed that it was in fact Kolohe (RW22), and the de-hooking operation occurred at 1017. Thank you from the bottom of my little ,bald heart !! The 17 day ordeal is finally over.

At 0917 posse member Kathy called to report an animal at Spitting Cave. After the RI operation ended I went to SC and after several ups, I finally confirmed the Irma (R010) ID. To my complete surprise I even managed to get a shot of her N3 bleach.

Sandy Beach lifeguard posse member Donovan called at 1441 to advise that an animal near Blowhole had been reported. When I arrived at 1450 I found Buster (RV08) snoozin' in the cove on the Sandy Beach side of the Blowhole Lookout. The ID was made by his V08 tag. This is a favorite hangout of his. Though the evidence is purely circumstantial I believe we have an answer to yesterday's Tako eater at Lanai Lookout, which is but a few flipper flaps away. I'd put a cat on it .

At 0715 Team Billand reported T15M fronting #1708, White Plains.

At 1041 the Billands called again with the report of Benny (RE74) mid beach at Makaha. He would depart at 1100.

At 1203 Team Billand called again to advise that Kermit (R012) was now within the cordon with T15M at White Plains.

An already pretty darned good day got even better with a call from my very most favorite Molokai resident, Diane Pike. She reported that Duke (RA12) was with her today, and was sporting his new cell tag. Back when I found him at RI with a new Cookie Cutter wound I wondered if he might not have done a Molokai mission. This pretty much answers the question for me. Thank you Diane !!!

At 0704 I found RM38 snoozin' in front of 1BS on Rabbit Island. He would be the only flippered resident of Rabbit Island today. Unfortunately, at 0904 he got company in the form of 2 female and one male aboard a yellow kayak, who landed just 40 ft from M38. He immediately took off. They were 100% responsible for his departure. He would haul out again at 1043 at the right end of the island where he spent the rest of the day.

The bad guys checked M38's wallow, and the explore the left end of the island, and departed at 1000. I contacted DOCARE at 0943, and DOCARE Officer Ken Lesperance responded, meeting and citing them upon their arrival at Kaupo Beach Park at 1025.

At 1100 posse member Kathy called to advise that Kaiwi (RK96) was at Spitting Cave. When I arrived at 1123 I could confirm the ID. I only saw two "ups" and then we lost her. She had been at the ladder in her favorite white water hang out, getting worked as usual, and lovin' it ! Tomorrow ????

The very same posse member Kathy, called at 1500 with the report of a foraging U/U in the waters off Lanai Lookout. Posse members June and Bob were also there. All confirmed having seen the animal eating a Tako (yeah...Monk Seals love Mexican Food...... no,no... an Octopus). I saw one up upon my arrival at 1513. No markers were visible and observations conditions were difficult. June's photos show at least one right, red tag (RIP ???), but no other markers are seen.

Team Billand called at 0801 with the report of T15M near Access 187A in Ewa Beach. Unfortunately, they called again at 0938 to advise that 3 dogs and their owner had run him off.

During that same conversation Barbara Billand asked if I knew that Irma (R010) was at Diamond Head today ? She had apparently gotten it from Dera. I immediately called Dera and she confirmed Irma's presence there today. Dera adbosed (advised?) that Irma was gone on a 1620 check. Tomorrow ???

She also advised that R5AY was at the Kahuku Golf Course, and that posse member Eileen had reported Ewa Girl at the Reef Runway today.

She also advised of an U/U in Laie. Hopefully, there will be confirming photos of all this stuff. Kelly Girl checked in at 1713 to advise that posse member Azlina had reported that the Laie animal was RI37, in her backyard.

Team Billand called at 1721 to say that they had gotten a call about an animal at #1708, White Plains . When they arrived at 1742 they found T15M. There is a complication at White Plains for a while. Apparently, "The Biggest Loser" is taping shows at WP, and disrupting an already chaotic situation.

In the slightly more than "Yesterday's News" department, the unstoppable Kelly Girl forwarded shots from Lindsey (Squinzer?) taken at Puena Point on 1-19-12. It is most definitely RI37. Thank yous to Kelly Girl and Lindsey.

At 0616 I found Kaiwi (RK96) waiting for me in a tide pool just a few feet away from her favorite Naupaka bush. She was in the bush by 0630, and has remained all day. She was still there when I left at dark. Thanks to "the elves" for a long hard day.

The NOAA team was ready this morning for another attempt at dehooking, but Kolohe was nowhere to be found.

At 1023 posse member Kathy called with the report of an animal at Spitting Cave. When I arrived at 1049 I found Duke (RA12), sporting his new transmitter, and doing 7 minute dives.

I departed SC but got only as far as the highway when Kathy called again to report a second animal had arrived at Spitting Cave. When I got back at I found that it was Kolohe (RW22), Though I never got a good look at the hook, I did see leader, and all other Kolohe markers.

When I got back to Makai Pier in the afternoon, I found that RIP (RR70) had the place all to himself.

Dera called at 0754 with a few reports. First of all Kermit (R012) was back in Waikiki for D#4. Both Karen Rohter and Diane Gabriel sent confirming photos.

Dera also reported an animal in Nanakuli. Team Billand would confirm 2AW, approximtely 35% molted.

Lastly atd 0754 Dera advise of an animal at Oneula Place, Ewa Beach. Team Billand confirmed T15M at 0848.

Kelly Evans forwarded photos from Azlina in Laie. She had RI37 behind her house again today.

Aloha Monk Seal lovers!
For those of you who don't know me, I have been working with the monk seal program off and on since 2005 and am currently a PhD student at Duke University where, through my research, I'm hoping to shed some light onto why juvenile seals in the Main Islands have better survival rates than those in the Northwest. (I'm the one who has been working with all the data from the cell phone tags we have been deploying around the Main Islands over the lats 2 years.) However, as most of you know, the monk seal program's budget has been cut repeatedly over the last few years and we can no longer afford to purchase all the tags we need to do our research. So, in order to keep moving forward we are getting creative!

The cell phone tags operate through either the AT&T or Verizon network so we are going to try to get the the attention of those companies and attempt some sort of corporate sponsorship for our research. To do this, I am planning to make a mock commercial for either Verizon or AT&T highlighting how their services are helping to save this critically endangered species...which will hopefully prompt them to give us money for more tags in return for a good PR campaign that shows their companies helping to save an endangered species.

In order to make a good commercial pitch I need your help! We are asking for the best photos or video that any of you have of seals with cell phone tags attached to them. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like any of the tagged seals are still transmitting, but here is a list of the animals who were tagged over the last two years: RB24, RK05, RO28, RI13, RI11, R4DI, R4DF (Makaiwi), R018, RE70, R012 (Kermit), RR70 (RIP), RB02, RW02, T21M, RW30, R306, RH42, RO36, and RK35 (tagged in 2007). Some of these tags fell off rather quickly, but if any of you happened to get photos or video of any of these seals while they had their tags, and you are willing to share them with us (you will receive credit if your photos are used), please send them to kenady.wilson@duke.edu. At 0710 I found Duke (RA12) and Kolohe (RW22) on Rabbit Island. NOAA personnel, and a film crew went to RI. Unfortunately, Kolohe and his 13 day fish hook saga, continues. He departed before NOAA personnel get to him. They did however, managed to get a cell phone tag on Duke.

At 1020 RIP (RR70) hauled out to the water front rocks , 40 ft left of SRI. When I got back to RI for a 1600 check, RIP was the only visible resident.

Gayle called at 1126 to report that she was with Kaiwi (RK96) at Spitting Cave. She called later to advise that she had not seen her for a while, but I responded anyway. I did not see her there, nor did she show up at Kaiwi Kove, as of 1700 . Tomorrow ?????????

Team Billand checked in at 0844 with the report of Benny (RE74) at Makaha. When they got back for a 1300 check he was gone.

At 1109, Ocean Safety called to advise of an animal just hauling out to life guard tower 2E in Waikiki. This is the third consecutive day of a haul out there. Karen Rohter sent confirming photos of Kermit (R012) today, and a telephone conversation with Diane Gabriel confirmed yesterday's animal as Kermit also.

At 1156 Team Billand reported Irma (R010) fronting #1708, at White Plains. When they went back for aa 1615 check , she was gone.

At 1547 Team Billand found 2AW at Tracks.

DeraMail advised that Kaiwi remained in the Sandy Beach area, so the Kaiwi Kuest was on all day, with special attention given to Kaiwi Kove. By end of day she had been a no show.

On my 0707 Rabbit Island check I found Kolohe (RW22), tucked into the base of the Right Middle Cliff area . It would take quite some time to get an ID (1023). I also confirmed that he does , in fact , have a fish hook and line at the right corner of his mouth. I notified Sean as soon as I was certain, and he advises that a morning rescue mission is being planned.

I had last seen Kolohe, ever so briefly, on 1-9-12 which was when the hooking was reported. He has had that hook in him for 12 days, and is obviously distressed by it.

On my 2nd RI check I found that Buster (RV08) had joined the cast, 60 ft left of 1BS, and Duke (RA12) was now on the water front rocks, 50 ft left of Seal Rock Inlet. All would remain the entire day.

Incidently, all of today's observations were from Kaupo Beach Park. A Kirin Beer commercial shoot, owned Makai Pier today. It was a Zoo !

Team Billand checked in at 0723 with the report of an overnighted 2AW, still on a small piece of beach at the Kalaeloa Boat Ramp. His D#2 molt is 15%.

The Billands checked in again at 0743 to advise that posse member Clay Gates was with Rocky (RH58) who had overnighted near Access #185C , in Ewa Beach. Clay advised that Rocky was gone on his 1155 check, but as he stood there, Irma (R010) hauled out and took her place.

Dana called at 0847 to advise that Lifeguard tower 2E in Waikiki had a visitor. My dollar is on Kermit, but I have no further word at this writing. Hopefully, Donna will have more info in the morning.

In the Yesterday's News department, Dana forwarded photos from posse members Suzanne & Dean, of La'akea (RK82) taken yesterday at the Campbell Bird Refuge in Kahuku.

The Kaiwi Kuest began at 0630, but I was batting zero. Dera checked in at 0736 to advise that transmitter data showed that Kaiwi had been in the Sandy Beach area at around 1630 yesterday afternoon, but the 2300 the map showed her back in the Spitting Cave area. As it turned out fisherman posse member Robert called at 0953 to advise that Kaiwi (RK96) was just hauling out at Crappy Cove. When I arrived at 1003 I confirmed the ID. Thanks to Karen R., Gayle, Zeeny & Marilyn for being great aunties. Kaiwi remained until 1819, when she up and departed. We rarely ever get to see a departure.

This marks the last useage of "Crappy Cove". I've called it that forever, but seeing it in print is a bit grating. I've decided that from now on I shall refer to the location as Kaiwi Kove. "So let it be written..... so let it be done", as Yul would say ! Well, that messes up my labels... but I agree Kaiwi Kove is a better name.... I can deal

At 1224 I found Duke (RA12) and Buster (RV08) together to the left of 1BS on Rabbit Island. They would remain all day.

At 0813 Team Billand checked in with the report of a molting animal at the Kalaeloa Boat Ramp. They would confirm the 2AW ID at 1052.

Marilyn did the Ka'ena Point trek today, and reported Ka'ena (RO40), Noa (R6FI) and 761 at the end of the world. Noa seems to have a new scar on is ventral, right side.

At 1258 Dera called with the report of an animal at lifeguard tower 2E in Waikiki. Dana reported that it was Kermit (R012) at 1519. Thanks to all the unsung heroes who dealt with Kermit today.

At 1519 Dana called with a report of an animal at Ewa Beach Park. Posse member Clay Gates, roped off Rocky (RH58) at 1549. The Billand confirmed the ID at 1556. Also at 1556 Team Billand reported M&M (R020) at access 185H in Ewa Beach. They reported that her new N23 bleach is clear and readable.

Dana called at 1630 to advise that posse member Suzanne had reported La'akea (RK82), by her N31 bleach, at the Campbell Bird Refuge in Kahuku.

Dana called again at 1749 to advise that Ua Malie had been seen a 1749. A call from Kelly Girl at 1749 confirmed the Ua Malie (RT10) ID. She and posse member Anthony had found her, at High Rock, Kahuku.
